Tutorial for converting KI CHD files to IMG files

Okay there has been a few questions regarding how to convert CHD files to IMG files. This tutorial is a step-by-step guide to do just that.

First though you will need a few things:- The above links point to freeware software. Do not ask for links to the CHD files.

Okay when you have got all that:-
  • Install Hex Workshop
  • Install HashCalc
  • Create a directory called KI in the root of C: i.e C:\ki
  • Copy Kinst.chd, Kinst2.chd, hdcomp.exe, KI v1.0 HD Patch.exe & KI2 v2.1 HD Patch.exe in to this directory.
  • Fire up HashCalc & check the crc32 hash of both Kinst.chd & Kinst2.chd
  • Kinst.chd should have a crc32 of (ad58772a)
  • Kinst2.chd should have a crc32 of (f43ff1ec)
  • If the crc's don't match then you should stop here as I have only done this with these crc's
  • Open a Dos command prompt by; Click Start > Run; type in cmd & then click okay.
  • Type cd c:\ki
  • Type hdcomp -extract kinst.chd ki.img
  • When extration is complete
  • Type hdcomp -extract kinst2.chd ki2.img
  • When extration is complete; close Dos box

Killer Instinct 1

Start Hex Workshop and open Ki.img. It should look like this:-

Click Edit > Insert; select Dec & type in 13 (see image below):-

After that it should look like this:-

You will now need to overwrite the first 13 bytes with:-
4147 2034 3139 2031 3320 3437 0A
Like this:-

After that click File > Save
If you want you can load this new file in to HashCalc to check the new crc; it should be:-
8742e2ca
If it's not then you have made a mistake above.

If it is:-
Open explorer and double click KI v1.0 HD Patch.exe
Uncheck make backup
Click start

After the file is patched check the crc again and it should be:-
1dd9d8b2

If all of the above went okay; you now have a good Ki.img file. Pat yourself on the back and move on to KI2.

Okay that's it. I hope this was okay and helped some of you (it was my first tutorial)

Let me know if you have any questions (except where to get the CHD files)

Cheers

Killer Instinct 2

Start Hex Workshop and open Ki2.img. It should look like this:-

Click Edit > Insert; select Dec & type in 13 (see image below):-

After that it should look like this:-

You will now need to overwrite the first 13 bytes with:-
4147 2038 3133 2031 3620 3633 0A
Like this:-

After that click File > Save
This may take awhile (like 10 minutes!!)
If you want you can load this new file in to HashCalc to check the new crc; it should be:-
25bcdb8e
If it's not then you have made a mistake above.

Now with this file we need to take an extra step. Basicaly we need to trim 38087168 bytes from the end of the file.

Start Hex Workshop and open Ki2.img again. Click Edit > Goto:-
Select Dec & From Beginning of file
Type in :-419586061 (see below image)

user posted image

Click go and you should end up here:-
Note:- Depending on how big you have Hex Workshop window open your view may be different. That does not matter as long as the offset is the same.

Press Shift+End to highlight all the data from this point to the end of the file:-

Click Edit > Delete to remove the highlighted data:-

After that click File > Save
This may take awhile (like 10 minutes!!)
If you want you can load this new file in to HashCalc to check the new crc; it should be:-
cc2632b8
If it's not then you have made a mistake above.

If it is:-
Open explorer and double click KI2 v2.1 HD Patch.exe
Uncheck make backup
Click start

After the file is patched check the crc again and it should be:-
11a9fc01

If all of the above went okay; you now have a good Ki2.img file. Pat yourself on the back you are done.

You can use RomCenter & the u64emu v3.04 dat file to validate your roms and img file. If you do it should look like this:-

Okay that's it. I hope this was okay and helped some of you (it was my first tutorial)

Let me know if you have any questions (except where to get the CHD files)

Great Guide, thanks xboxgeek, but I think Roll has the right idea here...

Here's an easy way to convert a CHD back into an IMG.

Unfortunately you need to be a member of those forums to get that attachment, but I've got nowhere to upload it. Perhaps someone else can get it and put it in a more convenient place.

In the zip are two batch files (and everything they need to run aside from the CHDs) that will turn a kinst.chd or kinst2.chd file into a working U64Emu IMG file. I did it with a set of MAME CHDs, and both work in U64 now.

This is true, but I thought I would do a tutorial anyway as people have been asking how to do it (even after Roll posted his link wink.gif which is currently down blink.gif )

If it can help someone get KI1 & KI2 running then great, if not, I enjoyed doing my first tutorial jester.gif

What do I do if my crc32 numbers are different than what is mentioned here?
The crc 32 i have on my Kinst2.chd is ed9c1617.
When converted with Roll's app, the crc32 i get off my coverted ki2.img
is also different.
So still can't get my KI2 working in KI-XXX...
Any help would be great.

To get mine working I had to get another download of "ki2_HDD.zip"
and get the correct rom set, one of my roms was not the right number:

ki2-l11.u98 (whereas I had ki2-l14.u98).
After this it was good to go.....

I would like to bring this thread out from the dead, and need some help!

First of all can the graphics on this thread be reinstated somehow? I'm sure wherever they were originally posted from don't exist anymore. Now moving on....

I was able to get kinst 1 working correctly even with out the graphics posted on this thread.

My CRC32 on kinst2.chd is exactly the same f43ff1ec, however when I edit the file in I don't receive the same CRC32 as posted by xboxgeek. Any ideas?

Well the damndestthing after 3 hours of trying and hex workshop telling me I don't have enough space and me not doing anything different, I suddenly get the same CRC32 on kinst2 file. I have verfied it is now working correctly.

Leave it to me to ask for help and suddenly it just starts working correctly.
