So I can tell you that I was VERY FRUSTRATED with the transfer times to my Xbox using SmartFTP. It took over 3 hours to transfer a 4+ gig legal backup. I read all the posts about FTP clients and HDD compatability and just wrote it off as a minimal BS type of thing I would have to put up with. I even went so far as to mod the Xbox with an external swapable HDD unit since all I had for HDDs were a few 20 gig drives I had laying around the house.

Yesterday I was tweaking the Xbox and used the tutorial on mapping your xbox on a XP PC. Today I transfered a 2.5 legal gig backup in less than 10 minutes!!! No matter how you do the math that is a HUGE improvement!!!

KNIGHTMARE says: "Give it a try!". See if it works for you!

I haven't been around for a while, but some time ago, I posted a conclusive outcome to this issue. I suggested to use a program called webdrive that does exactly that. It maps the drive, which allows you to use windows explorer to see all drives etc.
The transfer was a major improvement. I got on average 10 - 12 meg per second, as oppose to 400k per second with FTP clients.

Say no more, it's the way to go.

what exactly is mapping the harddrive?
Is there any risk of losing things on my xbox hdd such as evox, backed up games, gamesaves.etc?
and can I do it on the original hdd?

I think a GREAT deal of the speed factor boils down to the HD on both systems.

When I first started ripping DVDs and sending them to my PC, I was only getting about
2.5-3Meg a sec. This was with the stock hard drive in the Xbox and transferring to a 5200 rpm
120 GIG storage drive on my PC.

I have since upgraded my Xbox HD to a 120Gig IBM Deskstar 7200 RPM drive. When I send data
from the Xbox to my PC, I get speeds as high as 9.5-9.6Meg a sec. When I go the other way
PC to Xbox, it drops to 5.5-6.0 Meg a sec. When I send data from my Xbox to my other HD which
is a 7200 RPM 160GIG drive, I get speeds up to 9.6 Meg a sec.

A: it is easy to map a drive and..
B: Use Filezilla in XBMP... the fastest transfer I have had and EASY to set up.

Good luck

i had a problem with my connection speed also.

I just use a crossover cable, directly from my PC to my Xbox, using FlashFXP.

My connection was terribly slow, and then it was just dying.

All i done was update the driver for my network card in windows, now it transfers about 4gig in about 10 minutes. (rough guess, i've never timed it).

this is how my network connect is setup in windows, if it's any help.

i've got...
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol
Frame Type: Ethernet 802.2
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
IP address 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

They are the only options i've chose. Everything else is default.
