for replying to a post on here about the hdd led, i dug up an old link where i first saw individual HDD leds for PCs.

http://www.zapwizard.com/ide/

anyway, was wondering if i could just snip wire 39 and wire the HDD activity LED to the HDD side and the DVD activity to the DVD side. I snipped the wire and booted my xbox, it booted into evox fine. So i turned it off and proceeded to mod.

I wired the postivie connections together (sharing the supply via one 220ohm resistor) and wire the negative legs one to the HDD side of the snipped cable and one to the DVD side.

So i had two leds, wired upto the IDE cable and to the power. Switched on the xbox. HDD led light at first, then then the DVD one flashed as it checked the DVD drive.

I thought i was onto a winner, i thought id try booting an origonal to see the DVD led flashing. Put the disc in, evox reported 'unknown'. So i rebooted the console to let it boot by itself, the flubber stuttered and when i got into evox it still said unkown and the menu nav was very slow. I tried a DVD, it reported unkown. Tried MS dash, it didnt recognise the DVD either. I tried a normal CD in XBMP and again, nothing on the disk. I was worried id bust my samsung. I turned it off and removed the leds, and rejoined wire 39. Then it worked fine.

Im a lil confused now, im going to try adding a diode - or a resistor with a fairy high resistance to see whats what.

I dont understand why cutting wire 39 which is apparently used for nothing but the IDE activity LED stops the driving recognising the discs.

Weird, will report back later if i get this sussed

If you want a DVD activity LED, there is a DVD activity line in the DVD connector. The pic below shows which pin it is. I would recommend soldering to the pin on the underside of the motherboard. The pin goes high (up to around 3v) during DVD activity. So you should be able to just hook up a LED (with the appropriate resistor) between this pin and a ground.

is the DVD activity pin #8 is the ground???
if not, is there another place to solder the LED as ground for DVD activity and keep LED 5V from HDD...

It's not a ground, it supplies up to about 3v during DVD activity.

How about if Im running a normal PC DVD drive "parrallel" with the X-Box DVD drive...

|[ Basically this mod ]|

How can I hook up an LED so that a different LED lights up if Im reading from the PC DVD drive or the X-Box DVD drive..? Using the X-Box activity LED via your picture above.

Just a quick thought I though tI could do.

out of those 13 pins that are there on the dvd power connector, i know that only 12 pins are used, would it be possiable to use that extra 13th pin as a ground, or if not then which one of those pins could be used as a ground.

EDIT: or could someone direct me to a site that has what each of the 13 pins on the mobo is for. I would really like to get an answer to this. The only reason im not trying this my self is cuz i fear that i will bridge those 2 points and it will fuck up. like system not boot, board get fried, dvd drive get fried, etc.
