Hulu on Xbox 360 Exists, but Tied Up by Rights Issues
Posted by XanTium | June 2 23:02 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From 1up.com:
[QUOTE]
Rumors are spreading around the Internet that Microsoft is planning to announce a Hulu application for the Xbox 360 as one of their big E3 surprises. While we can't confirm whether that'll actually happen, here's what we can confirm: a Hulu application for the Xbox 360 definitely exists. A source close to Microsoft told 1UP that Microsoft does have the software for a Hulu application on the 360 fully up and running -- the only thing holding them back now are rights issues to Hulu programming.

The initial rumor was floated by Gear Live, who reported that their own source said Microsoft will announce a Hulu service on 360 at E3, which would require a subscription fee separate from an Xbox Live subscription (just like Netflix instant streaming on 360). Again, we can't confirm whether the announcement is set in stone. But if does pop up in Microsoft's E3 press conference, it'll only be because Microsoft was able to work out the licensing issues behind the scenes.

Under the proposal, Hulu would continue to provide for free the five most recent episodes of shows like Fox's "Glee," "ABC's "Lost" or NBC's "Saturday Night Live." But viewers who want to see additional episodes would pay $9.95 a month to access a more comprehensive selection, called Hulu Plus, these people said.

just keep that in mind.

The comments about 3rol and software causing the 360 to die... are getting wayy old... a few yrs old to be exact. The latest version of the 360 gets nowhere near HOT, (comparison to first gen 360).

how about using your computer for gaming? why buy a 360?.. the comment about using pc for media is as pointless as this statement!

Yes playon FTW, streams hulu and netflix video to my 360 and both my old xboxes with XBMC on them. I am guessing M$ will release this only to paying xbox live customers too so yet another reason why this is going to come up short IMO.

I am wondering why you think this will come up short? Also what has happen to this community where MS releases new products for the 360 and everyone bitches about it. It is something that wasn't there before and now you have the option to use it. The average person doesn't know how to hook up something to there TV to watch hulu on it. I am also pretty sure natiels you would have said the same thing about Netflix since only paying live customers can use that too. If history repeats itself you will be wrong again. Netflix has been so popular on xbox 360 they came out with Netflix for all current gen consoles and the xbox is still the only one you don't need a disc to use.

If hulu is 9.95 a month that seems kind of high just for streaming even if it is for the full library of the TV shows and not just last 5. Only time will tell if people are willing to pay that much for TV. At the same time though if you don't watch sports with this and netflix there is almost no need for cable TV so $10 is a lot cheaper than that.

Old, but still fair. It's not like all the old systems out there got swapped out for new ones.

I see this as a good thing, hopefully hulu knows that if they try and rape people it wont work, Netflix is perfectly priced for the value I get.

btw, anyone else notice Xbox Live subscriptions (12 month) have dropped on amazon and walmart to $38.70?
Comes to around $3.25 a month

Nobody bitching about that I see.

But, just like XBMC, the playon community has plugins for other sites from where you can also watch shows, so if Hulu goes pay only for the bulk of their stuff, I still have other option besides Hulu and Xbox Live Gold. I just never use Gold (most multiplay games degenerate into a bunch of idiots trying to prove who is alpha) so why start paying monthly now?
