X3cp - Lcd To Vfd Options

Has anyone attempted to swap the ugly-ass blue/white XLCD out of the X3CP and replace it with a VFD? I'm trying to get some feedbac on how difficult this would be.

Well, as long as it's a LCD compatible VFD you should be fine.
The only problem with it is that it will probably not fit in a X3CP becouse the PCB is much bigger on a VFD.

I have a 2x40 VFD in my custom case and it works like a charm. Looks much better also

As far as I am aware the X3 uses a common language and thus any LCD will do.

As his question was about a vfd, not a lcd I would say that most vfd's are NOT lcd compatible.

The safest way to go is with a Noritake U, V or W series vfd.
Just make sure it's HD 44780 compatible.

I screwed up thinking a parallell vfd would do just fine, but i was very wrong.

Yes, I am aware the output requirements. So you're right there.

I was more concrned as far as physical dimensions were required. I can fill any gap or dremel the opening larger if need be. I was more concerned about depth.

Anyone have any sample vfd dimensions?

Here you got the dimensions of the Noritake U-series which is a LCD- replacement line.
The one you are probably looking for is the CU20045SCPB-W5J which is 98.0 x 60.0mm.

I don't have a x3cp, but i think it will be too big.

Another company is Newhaven. The one most like the x3lcd is the M0420SD-204SDAR1-3, but that one also is way too big.

I can't see this happening if you don't use a 2x20 instead of a 4x20. Then there will be enough space.

thanks zephyr. The x3cp's opening as well as the X3LCD carry approx dimensions of (h)38mm*(w)95mm

it does no doubt limit my options, which is rather unfortunate. It would be a hard decision to move to a 2-line display after using a 4 line for so long.

There is a slight chance that the noritake unit you suggested could be used. Unfortunatly the circuit board sticking out so high above my harm that.
