So I got a couple of Hitachi drives off of ebay. One to fix a friends Box and one as a back up spare. I recieved 2 new hitachi drives. One is a 79FK and the other a 79FL. So I am using the FL to replace a drive in my friends xbox that has a faulty Benq drive in it. I retrieved the key off the Benq without any issues. So I hooked up the FL, got it in Mode B and pulled a Hit-OFW.bin file off of it. When loaded into JF, come to find out this isn't a valid FW file. So I take it I want to insert the Benq's key into an original FW file for the 79. Then write the FW to the drive. Then update to the latest IX version for the 79FL spoofed to a Benq. But I have no idea how to find out which original 79 FW I should be using, or if it matters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why on earth did you get hold of Hitachi drives on ebay? They are complete shite in terms of reading quality. There's hundreds of Benq ones available from china\hk region.

The Hitachi drives are extremely easy to brick too.

If you've got any sense, sell the Hitachi drives and get yaself some quality...

How do you know which firmware to flash? Well isn't the FK\FL the giveaway?

Well I am not a complete noob obviously. I am asking instead of bricking. And my old lady bought the drives when I wasn't here. Anyways looking thru the orig fw's in JF and of the 4 fw's listed none of them specify wither ther're for the L or K drives. So thanks for the wasted replies. If U don't have the answer or can't help why waste ur time responding?

Ya, useless response robo989.

1st off the L or K don't matter. (I like to think the FK stood for F"uc"K because MS knew the improved security on the 79 was going to make alot of people say that word. lol)

Does the drive respond to open and close commands ? If so i think the firmware on it must be valid.

So to figure out what firmware you need to be using you must get a good dump. When you open the dump you will see the key location. example 4B00

If you attempt to flash the drive with firmware that has wrong key location then the drive will brick and getting it fixed would cost more then you paid for the drive probably.

Try reading the drive using maximus toolbox.
