I know a few of the 360s launch titles had 4:3 support, while a few didnt (PDZ) which means letterboxing.

My question is, whats the deal with this? Is it just multiplatform games that support 4:3, while the exclusives wont, like Perfect Dark, and is there a way to check, like with upcoming games, GRAW etc.

Edit: Hum, just re-read, probably shouldve made myself clearer. What I meant is, ive played a couple of 360 games that dont letterbox and dont look stretched (PGR3) at the 4:3 aspect ratio. Will this continue? Or was it just because some of the launch titles were ports, and from now on 360 titles will all be in 16:9 meaning letterboxing.

Many thanks.

Ahh, crap, ive been looking around and it appears ive got my ratios wrong. Im running my 360 off an LCD monitor at 1024*1280, which I assumed was the same as a 4:3 aspect ratio on a normal TV.

The question is still the same though, thanks again.

It would appear that im talking to myself. Anyway, on the offchacne someone will answer, ive got another queestion.

After reading some stuff around the net, apparrently the 360 games are all programmed for 16:9 ratio. If this is true, why does the demo of NFS:MW look fine on my screen while PGR3 looks horrible and stretched? Both are full screen.

I would guess you are using VGA cables. try lowering your resolution to 1024*768 or lower

Aye I am, but its not PGR3s letterboxing that bugs me, this is a question rather than a compalint.

Again, NFS:MW seems to run fine, the demo anyway, full screen with no letterboxing at 1280*1024 and no stretching, why is this and will any other releases have that kind of support? The demo of NBA 2K (or whatever its called) works as well.

I don't remember the details but it has something to do with how pgr3 renders internally and how they left out switching resolutions above 1280x720 to make it for launch or something. Its pgr3s fault though, its widescreen in 1280x1024.

Cheers, they seem to have skimped quite a bit in that game to get it to launch (AA).

So how come PDZ is letterboxed at 1280*1024, but NFS:MW isnt, and runs fine (no stretching) at 1280*1024.

PGR3 does not support 1280x1024. It was added in a dashboard patch after or too late for PGR3 to adopt it and since they havent released a patch for the game yet it doesnt work properly.

PGR3 also has a bug where the online professional achievement is impossible to get so hopefully they will patch it sometime together with a 4:3 option for 1280x1024 (or whatever aspect 1280x1024 because its not 4:3).

Oh and games are made to render at 1280x720 so why WOULD they support 1280x1024 without letterboxing? Just be happy you get per-pixel output from the games instead of a stretched out mess. Similarly I should be here complaining that the games dont support 1600x1200 which is the native of my TFT. They didnt make the games for our TFTs!

Perhaps thats one of the few if not the only thing the game does properly? From what I heard it doubles the pixels from 640x480 to support some modes so I wouldnt brag too much. wink.gif

Where Bizarre took the time to optimize their game for a solid 30fps at all times, EA decided to throw in an extra res and let it tear and stutter like a mofo. I'll take the framerate on the standard 720p anyday.

NFS probably does it right because it's a cross platform game and has to support those resolutions on the PC, so the code was already there.

NFS:MW looks worse in 1280*1024 compared when you play it in 1280*720.
You also see less of the scenery i'm guessing that the game is running at 480p upscaled too 1280*1024.

I have the res 1280*720 on my crt monitor, i use the monitors picture settings to get the right aspect ratio
