Ballmer Talks Natal, Says Blu-ray Add-On for Xbox Coming
Posted by XanTium | October 22 10:04 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gizmodo.com:
[QUOTE]
In the first segment of our exclusive Steve Ballmer interview series, the Microsoft CEO and I talk about Natal, the blurring of console generations, and the surprising assertion that "you'll be able to get" Blu-ray add-on drives for Xbox 360.

When I asked Ballmer about adding Blu-ray to the Xbox, he said:
"Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there--you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."

Though he says it with certitude, the timing of any kind of Blu-ray accessory is unclear. Could he have mispoken? Certainly. However, when I asked Xbox spokespeople about Ballmer's revelation, they responded:
"Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we're not ready to comment."

I think Steve meant standalone blu-ray players.

Can I have it ? biggrin.gif

Seriously, though, if you PS3 is "collecting dust", then won't a blu-ray addon for the 360.... also "collect dust" (since you obviously aren't watching movies with your PS3)?

the 360 is too frekin loud for a br player and sucks too much Watt, Id rather buy a stand alone player for like 100-150 bucks than get an external br drive for the 360.

So now its kinda too f***in late for that br drive, they didnt want to bring it out when everyone wanted them, now the stand alone players are cheap enough for everyone to get one.

ms fucked up this one, they can kiss my ass now

It'd use a different drive, the HD-DVD add on wasn't loud at all.

You could argue that a Blu-ray drive for the 360 would double up as a BD drive for a PC.
That would be the main reason for me to get it smile.gif
Hopefully they'll have sense & sell it quite cheap, maybe around £50 (seeing as it's only a ROM drive).
But seeing as this is Microsoft, i wouldn't expect to see this at retail for any less than £90.

Correct, the HD DVD Rom drive wasn't loud, but the 360 is quite loud for movies.
Heck, even the PS3 is loud when playing a movie on a DVD.

Mine was doing that, I busted it out this week, and its not to bad, just getting used to the controller sucks.

been playing resistance 2, killzone 2, and little big planet. I have like at least 7-8 games for ps3 and barely ever touch it.

Same here, but you gotta have it if you want to play the good games that are PS3 only. Killzone and resistance were awsome, so is unchartered 2

It's about frakkin time they decided to release a Blu-ray player. If this is true, I am extremely happy.

WAY too little too late. Almost everyone who is interested in BR have picked up a ps3 slim. If MS would have come out with this at or right before the ps3 slim, it would have severely hurt sony. Now it won't even make as big as dent as the HD-DVD addon. If MS would have simply broke this news before the ps3 slim launch, it would have made a big difference. But instead they stupidly denied it.
