Hi Guys,

I've replaced my retail HDD with a Seagate 250gb drive following various tutorials and using Slayer's Auto Installer, but I can't get an FTP connection and it won't boot the EvoX dash without the boot disk. I've done it once already and was successful, but last night I wanted to reformat/reinstall using the same disk as before but now it just boots to the MS dash and I can't get an FTP connection. Does anyone have any ideas about what I'm doing wrong? Thank you.

Hi,

if it can boot evox from a dvd, than you know that the softmod is working.

Use the evox bootdisk and ftp to your xbox. Probably the dash wasn't installed properly on the disk.

FTP is a dashboard functionality. So, without a proper working dash, you can't FTP.

If your dashboard boots from a disk, than you will need a working DHCP server so that the dash gets a proper IP adress. You should be able to ftp to that IP adress.

regards.

I'm using a crossover cable FTP and now that I look back I connected through my router. Could this be why I can't connect to my xbox with or without the boot disk. I have to go to work right now but, I'll try your suggestions and try to reinstall the dash when I get home. I appreciate the quick response. Thanks.

Hi,

hard to say. Most modern routers have autosensing ports. If you are using the wrong cable, they will switch their pin configuration from downlink to uplink so that it works. The lights on the router and those surrounding the xbox lan connection give an indication of the link. You should have 'green on' and 'orange flashing' on the back of your xbox.

regards.

Is the box hardmodded or softmodded? What sort of hardmod/softmod is it using?

If it's softmodded, be careful which files you move/replace. You may lose the ability to boot Slayers if you accidentally damage the mod (something many people do when attempting to change their dashboard setup).

Note that you won't ever be able to FTP to the MS Dash.

I'm trying to read up on the guides, but I think that I have a hard modded xbox. All I know right know is that it has an Aladdin chip in it (don't know which one). Up until I got it (I bought it from a friend who was in Korea for a while) it still had the retail HDD in it. I still have it but like I said earlier I've since upgraded to a larger HDD using Slayer's 2.7 install disk and it was working fine, but I started moving some files around thru FTP (uninstalling Emuls and apps that I don't need/want) and I decided to reinstall/format the drive and start fresh but now it doesn't want to boot the evox dash w/o the disc. Is there any hope. Sorry if I'm unable to help you help me.

Also since I've had it, it's never told me what bios it's running. Can I flash/upgrade the BIOS? U think that would help?

Hi,

if it has a modchip, just use the slayers disk to install evox on your harddisk. You might need to change the folder and xbe name to one your bios is trying to boot. Maybe you can look on the original harddisk where the dashboard should be located and what name it should have.

regards.

there are 2 format options in slayers, 1 to "restore" a drive to retail state, and another to install evox and apps, are you sure you didnt use the retail option?

load slayers and slect install/upgrade evox/apps or some option similar (cant quite remember slayers menu structure)

This sucks. Dude, I've been using the option to install EvoX and apps on a large hdd. I watch it do what it does and then at the end it said "Done". What do I do after that? I can't get a connection to my pc and I can't remove the disk because it won't boot the evox dash. I'm trying to find the tutorial I read that walked me through it the first time I did it with success. How do I check to see what .xbe my bios is looking for? should I upgrade my bios? can I flash the evox M8 to my aladdin? sorry for all the questions but I'm getting frustrated and i'm trying to find a solution. i'm still reading tuts and guides but if you guys can crack this for me it would cool.

Perhaps this would be the "simplest" way to do it:

Unlock both your HDDs (Slayers should let you do this), plug your original drive into your PC (in place of, say, your CD/DVD drive).

Boot your computer and load Xplorer360. Have that copy everything from the X-Box drive onto your PC drive. You'll need anywhere up to 10gb of free space on C: for this.

Power down and attach the new drive. Reboot and load Xplorer360 again, delete any files you can see on there, and then copy the backup of the old drive on.

Stick the new drive in your X-Box and it should boot. Plus all your old save games, emulator settings and so forth will be there waiting for you.

I see 6 partitions 0 - 5. 0, 1 & 2 show nothing in them and 3, 4 & 5 have files in them - is this right? I've copied the partitions to a folder on my desktop but it didn't even take up a gig

I had this same problem, I think it's because the download I did was corrupt. I used XboxHDM to make everything for my 80gb drive and just installed the softmod with action replay. Seems like you can easily fix it with Xplorer360 though.

I got it back! Thanks guys. Okay, here's what I got out of this.

When I booted up the Slayer disk and installed/reformatted my HDD, I lost the ability to FTP via crossover. It didn't matter if I had the disk in or not. Even after I tried all the suggestions above; in the end it was the FTP method. I was able to FTP only through my router. Once the connection was established, the rest of the "HDD installation steps" were followed as usual. After I transfered my backups of C/ and E/, I was then able to connect via the crossover FTP method. Now everything works fine.

Now am I the only one with this problem? Should I have been able to connect with the crossover from the beginning?

You're welcome, glad it worked out, I say it's the best feeling after recovering your Xbox. It's the worst when you mess up again, so don't biggrin.gif
