I have a soft modded Xbox with XBMC (among other things of course.) I hacked a controller cable and a usb extension cable to add a usb port. When using my flash drive with XBMC, the drive randomly (and intermittently) disappears before the video will play. Once the video starts playing, it usually keeps working. I originally had a usb port hooked to the cut up cable, but suspected that was the problem. No change since going to the extension cord. Other items, such as my usb keyboard, do not give any trouble.

Anybody have similar issues?

My electrical and soldering skills are above average (and I have redone it three times!) so I do not believe it is a poor connection or short in my wiring job. I have also continuity tested while looking at pinouts and found no problems.

It just sounds to me like one of the many ways USB devices can misbehave when attached to a Xbox whatever method you use. The variety of problems range from the outright refusal to work or even be recognised at all to those that, like yours and two Sandisk Cruzers I own, usually work but sometimes randomly fail.

I use a controller port USB adapter cable and I've never employed my flash drives for the same purpose you are doing though so it maybe something else specific to that. I'd wait for advice from others who may know more about this particular use.

Otherwise, except for trying another USB flash drive, I can't think what else to suggest.

I agree that its most likely that the xbox doesnt like your flashdrive , i have a 4gig sandisk cruzer that works occasionally and a 2gig generic swivel drive that works all the time - just luck of the draw.

When people have to leave their computers in a hurry, there may be questions as to why it is important to properly unplug a USB flash drive.
