Check the drive motor and gears/band are fine. Drive still ejects, but won't spin up. It looks like something on the board is bad. Looks like it was exposed to high heat for too long and some traces are starting to peel up. Jf and windows pick it up fine. I tried to dump drive key but only get 7474747 error. I think the drive is done for.
It was flashed with an older Xtreme firmware.

Is there anyway to retrieve the drive key. Or do I just have to get a new console.

It has the newer dashboard so the jtag hack is not possible.

I think you have to take off the TSOP chip and send it off to someone, unless you have a williems (sp?) programmer and some kind of adapter. Sorry i don't know much about the actual process but my first flash was with a hitachi and a friend fried the damn thing trying to put it into Mode B by crossing wires (stupid stupid stupid on both of our parts) but anyways if you were the one who flashed the drive then it SHOULD be in your JF history, CTRL-F12 i believe. Good luck.

You are going to have to remove the tsop and buy an external programmer to read the chip so you can get the drive key before you can replace the drive.

You can go HERE and find someone like me that has an external programmer that can do it for you. Many of the modders may not have the programmer so you will want to ask them first.

I agree with other members that you can read key using SPI programmer. But I've got one more suggestion. You can do it using one more (working) Hitachi drive. You need to replace eeprom chip (from dead drive to working one) and after that you can read the FW.

Does the working Hitachi drive have to be the same rom(78) version? Also How much would someone charge to get the key off of the eeprom?

You don't need the drive to spin up for Jungleflasher.

If you're able to load eject the tray (i.e get it into ModeB) you can do this yourself.

Connect the drive and eject the tray. Start JungleFlasher.
Go to the 3120L section and press SHIFT/CTRL/F12 - this will enable PortIO32 mode, so select this at the top of the window (as opposed to WinASPI).

Select your SATA port and click on Send Modeb. Click ok with the warning about ejecting the drive first and let the drive tray close (or if the drive isn't loading/ejecting, push it closed yourself).

It should now say it's in mode B. Click the dump firmware option as per normal and it should dump the drive. EDIT: Make sure JungleFlasher has detected the right version drive. If it hasn't, manually change it to suit (v78).

Job done.

FTR, I don't use WinASPI method for any Hitachi's since it relies on the drive spinning up. This will work with all Hitachis with exception to v79s as they need an unlock CD.

I have dumped the firmware. The Key is lost. I get a 74747474747474 serial key. Witch I know is wrong. I am looking into how to retrieve the key by other means. Something on the drive is bad and gives out no key. Thanx for all the help guys but I am still looking for a way to get the key.

If you have tried what I suggested and it's still not working, then you'll need to get the TSOP read by a programmer. A few if us offer this service should you need it.

If you have another working v78 and the tools to do so, yes.

If I remove the TSOP and send it to someone that can read it. How much do people usually charge for that?

If you're in the UK send me a PM.

My advice though is to leave the TSOP as is on the board and send the entire board.
