Said it before and I'll say it again, I wonder how much they'll charge for a proprietary HDMI cable.

Any HDMI cable is compatible... there is a standard HDMI port on the back of the PS3; not a proprietary A/V output.

Or so it would appear. I'm not sure Sony has said "its a store off the shelf HDMI cable" and if they haven't then I wouldn't be surprised if they had some special coil required in the cable to filter or whatnot making it PS3 compatible.

Yeah I know. Was thinking of how much someone less clued up would get charged for official Sony cables...

I wouldn't doubt if they just made it a regular old HDMI port...

After-all they included toslink on the PS2.

And both the PS1 and PS2 shared the same AV adapter... I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the PS3 used the same AV adapter... if they DO use the same one then there would be no real point in making a proprietary HDMI cable as they wont be making any money on AV cable sales anyway.

That's a good point; People with a PS2 component cable may already have what they're looking for. The port on the PS3 looks very similar to the PS2 AV port.

It's a good thing EA never got into hardware... that sounds like something they would think of rolleyes.gif.

Mark up on any type of cable is stupid high. I had a friend worked for best buy and he would get cables for roughly 80% off. BB discount is cost +5%. I know that 5.80 will kill you, but I'm sure folks will manage. This of course assumes the HDMI port is a standard HDMI port.

Considering these are GBP prices, people are getting stung left right and centre.

It's not just Maplins at it tho - go into any high street in the UK and cable prices are extortionate.

You've got USB cables at £15 a pop (1 metre!!) - it's only until you go shopping online for stuff do you realise how much this stuff should be costing. I got a set of 2m OFC component cables and a 2m TOSlink cable for just over 11GBP - compared to the price of a 1m TOSlink in the high street at 12GBP.

Hopefully, people will start to wise up and stop buying cables from the high street.....

BTW I'm in Motherwell.

And yes, I'm an Englishman biggrin.gif

ahh sarcasm, it's hard to get across on a forum. I was making fun of the guy who seemed genuinely shocked at the $50 price while at the same time trying to give him a low cost alternative i.e. monoprice.

Atleast it's looking like the multi AV out will be the same as the PS2's - I won't have to buy another component cable, if I ever want to use component

I really like the fact that sony has used standard a/v connections with their consoles. They have a regular TOSlink jack on the back of the console, instead of on the cable (of which i hate; damn you monster for forcing me buy your TOSlink cable of which is manditory for digital out with their cables grr.gif ). And i would imagine that their HDMI cable is standard too. It's also very nice how they and nintendo have kept the exact same A/V port on all of their consoles, thereby not forcing us to keep buying cables for their later systems (damn money grubbers).
