After inserting a picture disk, I'm given the option to a apply a selected picture as a background theme. What date exactly was this feature added? Or has it been there since day one?

I'm pretty sure it was available before NXE. I don't know when it was added as a feature, but I know I used pictures as themes around 2007.

I think back then, you could do it using a USB. Perhaps it was only after the Nov '08 update that you could do it using a picture disk.

You might be right. I did use USB. I've never actually put a disc with pictures in my 360. I tried perusing the 360 System Software page on Wikipedia, but I can't find a reference to the feature anywhere. You might try checking some of the sources if it's not on the page.
