I'm thinking about buying a Nintendo DS and was thinking about the Lite, until I noticed on eBay that standard DS's are selling for average £60 (sometimes including a game too). I've read the differences between the standard and Lite, but I'd like your opinions on whether the Lite is worth paying the extra £50-£60 ... or twice as much for? It seems to me its not worth twice as much money but your opinions are appreciated smile.gif

I have both and even though the Lite is freaking amazing (size, look, SCREENS) the old DS is still great hardware! It really depends on the money you're willing to shell out for it.

But my guess is you will regret having the old one when actually holding the Lite. The new screens are simply amazing. It's also a lot thinner, about half of the original. Just go to a gameshop and compare both. You'll know right away if it's worth the extra money for you.

Hell, last time I checked the suggested retail price for both is exactly the same.
(Someone's getting ripped off here)

Why take a backwards step?
I just bought a DS Lite and it's the ish!
The best thing about the DS Lite is that the screens are much brighter and games like Metroid Prime Hunters look a lot better on the DS Lite as a result of that.

See how well you can use the face buttons and the L&R buttons on the Lite, if you can use those well in games that require all the buttons at once, you'll have little reason not to get the lite except price (DS original currently has some good bundles out).

But on the other hand using any system once might not be a good way to get an impression on how well you can use it.

Yeah I fired some Lites up in a game shop for test purposes. The original DS is embarrassingly uninspiring compared to these new joints. The screens, the screens. You'll see.

Well, if any of you decide to buy an original DS, let me know. I'm selling my import black Japanese one (plays all regions.)

Does anyone know if the DS lite can still be modified to play Gameboy games like the original DS can?

I'm not buying one but I know that would be a deal breaker for me.

By using a flash card or another way?
I'm using a Supercard SD which uses existing GBA emulators to run GB and GBC games on the DS. It seems to work well from the few games that I've played. Since it's basically a GBA app, I assume that this would work on the Lite or regular DS.

Actually IIRC the regular DS has a plastic knotch you can file off and a single jumper to solder together and it allow you to play GBA and previous games.

From what I remember the DS was built with Gameboy BC in mind but they disabled it before release because they didn't want it to seem like it was replacing the GBA

Interesting. I've googled this a few times and all I can see is talk about fake mods. Do you have a link that show this because I have an old GB cart I could try out.

Yes, it can, it much the same way the normal DS does.
