Pre-requisites:
truncate
growisofs, XboxBurner or OSx360
Links:
download truncate/dvd+rw-mediainfo/growisofs pack here or here
download XboxBurner here (XboxBurner bundles/installs growisofs and dvd+rw-mediainfo to the following dir: /Applications/XBoxBurner.app/Contents/MacOS)
download OSx360 here

Alternatively: Manually installing truncate:
1) Install XCode 4 from the App store (Note: this downloads the Xcode installer)
2) Run the "Install Xcode" app created in your Applications folder
3) Install Macports (download here)
4) Install the necessary binarie(s) using the following commands:
CODE
sudo /opt/local/bin/port selfupdate
sudo /opt/local/bin/port install truncate

Step 1

Truncating an XGD3 ISO on OSX:
CODE
/opt/local/bin/truncate myXGD3backup.iso 8547991552

Step 2

Burning w/ XboxBurner GUI:
This is not possible yet as the LayerBreak field is fixed. Will update if/when XboxBurner is updated to support the required offset

Burning w/ growisofs using XboxBurner binaries:
CODE
/Applications/XBoxBurner.app/Contents/MacOS/dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/rdisk5
(use this command to verify which drive is the DVD writer)
/Applications/XBoxBurner.app/Contents/MacOS/growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dao -use-the-force-luke=break:2086912 -dvd-compat -speed=4 -Z /dev/rdisk5=myXGD3backup.iso
(repace rdisk5 with the correct drive number)

Burning w/ growisofs (using attached binaries):
dump the 3 binaries into /usr/sbin
CODE
dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/rdisk5
growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dao -use-the-force-luke=break:2086912 -dvd-compat -speed=4 -Z /dev/rdisk5=myXGD3backup.iso

(again substitute rdisk5 with your DVD's drive number)

Burning w/ OSx360:
In OSx360 "Configuration" uncheck everything except for "Perform Action on File Open" and set to "Go to Burn View"
Check "Specify Custom Layer Break" type 2086912 *hit return/enter* then close the configuration window
Before burning set "Speed" to 4X (or 2.4X)" and "Method" to growisofs

Had to figure this out, so for those that are not used to working with the terminal, I wrote this little addition on josh256 for burning a xbox360 XDG3 disc on the Mac.

After downloading the Truncate App pack, unpack it and put the Truncate App somewhere on your computer (it doesn't matter where..!).
Open terminal
first drop the Truncate App in the terminal window
Then drop the ISO file in the same terminal window
Then copy and paste 8547991552 in the same terminal window

Hit enter, and your file is truncated. It only takes a second, so at first I almost thought nothing happened, but it did.

Then burn with OSx360, using the setting from josh256.

Good call Damaded. I forgot about the old GUI to terminal drag-and-drop;)

Thanks,
Josh

I keep getting errors when I began the burn process usually about 1/3 through, this kinda sucks! I've done all the drag and drop from damaded but OSx360 still ends in error, any suggestions?

Do we still have to truncate the RRoD (ie Gears of War 3) releases?

EDIT: Figured it out. Yes. You do have to use truncate.

@tpxprd1

Please tell us what caused the errors you were getting the first time around, and what you did to solve the problem..?

It could help some other guys having the same issues...

Thanks in advance.

Or you can just burn with isoBurn, which supports XGD3 discs and truncates them automatically.

I followed all of the directions, the only thing I did different was install xcode from my snow leopard install disk. Now I'm having issues burning Rage. Grr. i get the following error.

growisofs Failed./n/nError::-[ WRITE@LBA=420h failed with SK=3h/ASC=0Ch/ACQ=00h]:

JayarrrrrBalance:
Your truncate is failing, not sure why. Is that this pack or an Xcode/ports compile?

tpxprd1:
When does this error occur and what media are you using (brand/speed)?

jasch:
Yep, looks like the easiest way is now with IsoBurn ($5, app store). Thanks

Important:
Presently truncating the ISO to fit on a DVD+R DL is the only way to burn an 0800 XGD3 backup. This could ultimately be unsafe for play on live.

New firmware is under development for a specific DVD writer (quite possibly the Pioneer 219) that will allow a full 0800 XGD3 to be over-burned on traditional Verbatim DVD+R DL media

thanks for the mac help.

I had used iburn360 and abgx but wondered if that would work anymore. Sounds like even if I could get the truncate setting right, my burner might flake anyway.
