I recently bought an anti-static wrist band to be working on my Xbox with, and I would like to know a few things... and please save me the "omg n00b!" attitude smile.gif

I have no idea how to use the wrist band- only because I don't fully understand what a grounded object is. An example would be nice.

Also, is glass safe to work on? Because I plan on chipping it on a glass table.

Thx.

A glass table is fine, and might actually help keep any charge not reach the box, glass is a terrible conductor of electricity. As for grounded object I was lucky that my PC case was on the table I used so I clipped my band to the chasis.

Im not so sure about the table leg, i don't think it is suitable..... but what i do know is that a radiator will work, it does not have to be electric, a traditional one is grounded too.... clip to a bare metal part of it and you will be fine, or a bare metal part of your pc (which should be plugged in) will do too.......

To be honest, static electricity is over hyped.... its not a case of touching something without precautions will blow it, the chances of that happening are slim..... but always a good idea to be safe........

I work for a computer manufacturer, and we never use wrist straps, i can only think of one occasion in my last 3 years when something blew with static (it wasn't me, and im not 100% it was even static).... the work benches are static protected.... but still.........

Most ESD damage is not immediately apparent, and can show up months down the line as "flaky" or "buggy" equipment. Anyone who does not take antistatic precautions is asking for trouble in the long run.

Why not take the precautions? Wrist straps/antistatic mats are cheap, and it takes five seconds to protect your work station.

Please let me know which computer manufacturer you work for, so I can make sure to not buy from that company. laugh.gif

I really dont think its a good idea that i reveal that info..... heh tongue.gif

Honestly... i know people that have worked for several big PC manufacturers (including compaq).... and you would not believe me if i told some of the stories i hear....

If you own a PC chances are that it has been handled without the correct precautions.

EDIT:: We take precautions as in minimising the amont of handling an item gets, keeping it in its packaging when not needed and handling by non electronic (plastic...etc) parts of the product..... common sense (i know AS strap is common sense too, you are right, but im just saying, its like saying dont cross the road or you could get run down)
