from personal experience... iwould not suggest upgrading thermal compound or adding extra fans or anything that voids the warranty UNLESS you actually need it and your console has been overheating. I did it as a precaution (had never overheated once before...) and not i'm getting the 3 led hardware failure and i cant send it back for a replacement because its void...

yeah it sucks

There is a way you can send it back to the store you got it from but im pretty sure its against the rules to put it on here. But i done almost the same thing as nofear (who i got the idea from). I just got two fans i had lying around and got a 12v adapter cut the ends off both the fans and the adapter. Put positive with positive and negative with negative and "bam" pluggable cooling system for the 360!!!

Contrary to the portion of this tutorial that states that if your feeling lucky put some AS5 on the GDDR3 Ram Chips, the heatsink DOES NOT rest on it. I repeat THE HEATSINK DOES NOT REST ON THE RAM CHIPS. DO NOT PUT AS5 ON YOUR RAM CHIPS UNDER THE GPU! You will just add a layer of paste that will just sit there and make heat condense!

can you please post factual information? There have been atleast 10 people including me on here that have proved that the thermal paste does hit the heatsink over the ram chips.

ok first of all wtf is up with all these posts talking about voiding your warranty? you'd have to be the world's biggest idiot to think that opening your 360 (or any other console, or almost every consumer product available) will NOT void the warranty. we all know it will, so if anyone is reading this and thinking about performing the mod, they'll be aware of the consequences if it goes belly-up.

glad i got that off my chest.

second of all, i'm wondering about these extra fans stuck on the outside of the case - i'm assuming the two internal fans are still functioning as well? if these fans are spinning and sucking extra air out, wouldn't that cause the two internal fans to spin faster? if so, wouldn't that create some excess voltage (spinning converting into electricity)? i'd assume that that would only be the case if they were running at full speed (12v) to begin with, though.

may do this thermal mod, and possibly get some ramsinks too. i've already opened my 360 to get at the drive to repair a faulty premium that was also out of warranty (before i learned about the whole firmware encryption thingy) so my warranty is void anyway (and the back doesn't look too hot as it was the first 360 i opened and had a helluva time with the tabs!)

i had a look at mine too and could see the gap with my naked eyes. although having said that, would the paste still be thick enough to reach the heatsink? what if i just used thermal pads on the ram and AS5 on the cpu/gpu?

Where did you get those heat sinks for the ram? And did you use AS5 on them?

Thanks

He cut his heatsink in that picture then ebayed them. I think the stick on heatsinks came with his watercooling kit but can be bought here

If anyone knows of any black, red, or silver stick on heatsinks please post or PM me.
