Hi,

I would like to use the Samsung SpinPoint T166 (HD501LJ) in my XBox. Do you think this is technically possible by using this adapter: http://www.satacables.com/html/sata_to_ide_adapter.html ?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

very likely, it won't work. In the specs of the adapter it says that only one device can be connected to the ide cable (master) So, probably the adapter has no support for a ide slave device. In the xbox, the dvd-rom is the slave device.

regards.

Hmm, I think it is said that there can be used only one of these adapters on the IDE port:

QUOTE
Master Device Only, Only one adapter per IDE Cable

because the adapter (and the drive attached to it) is automatically "jumpered" to master.

Hi again,

maybe you are right. It is not very clearly described in the specifications. SATA drives have a SATA port dedicated to them which could explain why the device can only be a Master.
If you want to do a softmod, you will still have the issue that the adapter might not support the harddisk locking, as it is a hardly used option in pc's that is not even supported on every harddisk.
The xbox Ide port is normally a ATA-66. You will need to use a 80 wire ribbon cable for ATA-100.

A couple of days (maybe a week) ago, someone on this Forum tried to do the same thing. (Probably with a different adapter.) He had a lot of trouble with it and I can't remember reading that he finally succeeded.

I don't want to scare you off, but it will be a challenge.

regards.

Okay, I finally tried it. Bought a Samsung HD501LJ and used it with this adapter. The HDD ist running without any problems, it is lockable and its temperature is shown in XBMC. Could not ask for more.

I'm totally glad with this solution!
