I''ve already purchased the paly and charge kit. As I think more about it, it seems that the controller may be plugged in more often than not. If you haven't bought it yet, forget the play and charge kit and opt for lithium AA batteries.

Does this mean that you cannot plug a TOS (optical) audio cable to the Core version?

From the FAQ section

QUOTE

What A/V cables are included with the Xbox360?
The Premium Xbox360 package comes with a single A/V adapter that includes both composite and component output, as well as stereo RCA output. It also has a socket in the connector for a digital toslink audio output for surround sound. There is a switch on the dongle to select component or composite.
The Core Xbox360 package comes with a standard composite A/V adapter with stereo RCA outputs for audio and does not include an optical output for surround sound.

This can't be right?

To use optical sound, you will need the hi-def A/V cable. The standard RCA type cable in the core system does not have optical output.
