CES 2007: Microsoft Will Add Games to Zune by July 2008
Posted by XanTium | January 9 13:08 EST
From teamxbox.com:
Microsoft will introduce video games for its Zune music player within 18 months to match features available on Apple's dominant iPod.
Peter Moore confirmed the plan to Bloomberg yesterday, saying the Zune's large screen will offer a better way to play handheld games. "I love the interface, I love the screen,'' Moore said at a dinner with member of the press during the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Damn, 18 months? In the technology world, thats a LONG time. You'd think the other Zune branded devices would be dropping before then. Whatever, I love my Zune... with or without games.

It's going to take 18months to get IPTV firmed up and then comes the big slam. Games, streaming iptv etc. We all know how this story ends. Microsoft will eventually dominate the mobile music/gaming market. XBOX360 is the number one console and no one thought that MS could pull it off a few years ago. Three months ago they bought off the RIAA and pretty much guaranteed amnesty for anyone with pirated music as long as it's on a Zune. Quietly they build the foundation just like they did with XBOX. Taking a loss here to make serious gains later on. They are getting ready to make some big moves in the next two years. Just ask Novell and the soon to be beaten to death Red-Hat (Can you say $300 million dollar legal war chest with a solid IP case).

I heard a rumour that games on the zune won't simply be loadable via software, but in fact the addition of gaming is actually a hardware attachment for the Zune itself. I can't begin to speculate on how that would look or work, but I like the idea. The screen is big enough to provide a great gaming experience...
