from searching the forums, it seems as though there are several methods of backing up games. can someone knowledgeable give a n(.)(.)b a breakdown of the various methods? advantages v. disadvantages, pro/con, etc.

i want to know the easiest, most effective method of backing up my games and play those backup disks on the xbox360 with the least complicated, least intrusive, safest, economical modification to the hardware/firmware.

is the jury still out? am i rambling? are we all still waiting? any input would be appreciated.

the short version of the generic decision tree to backup biggrin.gif

If you want to avoid opening you x360 and/or connecting you x360 to your PC every time, you need to acquire a PC drive that can do the whole extraction of your games. This is the sh-D162C (IDE) or now the
SH-D163A(SATA). You use this with xbox backup creator and no need to even come close to your x360 during the backup process!!!
You need to shop well as some are selling this a bit expensive, but if you look well you will find it.

If the solution above is not for you (do not want to acquire the drive, do not mind connecting to your x360 every time...) then your choices are the following:

Hitachi owner: connect your drive to your pc and get the ss.bin with getss or xbox backup creator; get the game partition using wxripper (see tutorial) with a PC Drive (You may need to disassemble the drive). Merge with ssmerger.

Samsung owner: can use the hitachi method above, or use better use xbox backup creator to extract the entire image.

all tutorials are here.

So with the sh-D162C and Xbox Backup Creator, it gets everything I need, uncluding the security sector? If so, will this method also work with a patched hitachi 0078 drive?

Your backup should work on a flashed v78, if they were done with xbc and a sh-D162C.
Eveyrthing is included: game, ss, dmi,pfi and video sections.

If your question was if you could use the xboxcreator to extract with a v78 , then the answer is no. sad.gif

If you get the SH-D163A along with Xbox Backup Creator (Or Schtrom Xtract found on nme-360.com), it is by far the easiest, fastest, and safiest way to make backup copies.

Are those the only two drives that will work, or are there more samsung drives that will work?

Any suggestions for another drive to flash. Both Samsung/Toshiba drives are unavailable on the internet unless you want to bid on them

Just ordered my SH-D162C on the big auction site a couple of days ago.
Total price was about $75.
Hope this wasn't to much......but......guess it doesn't really matter at this point.
If it works for me.......will be worth it. smile.gif
