I have a hitachi drive that has finally ceased to read discs:
has thrown multiple error codes for a long time
worked for a while while by moving and tapping in certain ways
when it does not work, it makes an odd noise for 5 seconds then says "unreadable disc"

I have a another hitachi drive, confirmed nearly identical, from a different generation xbox that threw a HATA/GPU solder error.

Should I:
replace the laser of the faulty drive with the healthy drive laser
-or-
marry the healthy drive with the healthy motherboard

In your reasoned opinion, is there a recommended tutorial? If so, is it possible for you to direct me?

All you really have to do is move the drive board. Old hitachis all had same hardware, just different revision driveboards. If you move the drive board to the good drive, then all should be well as long as the laser is good and the problem isnt the drive board itself.

used the tutorial for replacing the laser, worked great. I had v47 october 2005 for both of them and it works. I lucked out. Thank you very much!
