I remember hearing that it's terrible, but has it been improved at all over the years? I think that there is upconversion now, but what overall image accuracy beyond that?

Any firmware updates that have helped?

Also wondering, if a buy new XBox (any new one, like the arcade), can I buy an HDMI cable for it or would I need to only be using the HDMI system.

DVD playback qualtiy is what you would expect ( DVD like quality) there is upscaling when it is connected to a hd tv via HDMI or HD AV cable other than that you will be watching in SD and yes you can buy a HDMI cable if your xbox has a HDMI port and your tv does.

No problem here, I havent done a comparison but sometimes I watch DVD's either on my PS3 or 360 and I would say both the same. But both are on HDMI so I don't know if that helps.

I have just been down on atraining course to do with some work installing/servicing metering equipment for the broadcast authority.
Some of the gear we have to monitor (so as to the BA know why the Tv is on with no channels being watched) are games machines. We had a 40GB PS3 set up to a 37" TV and a 360 side by side. We simply swapped the cables (HDMI) between machines during the monitoring. The DVD was Nuns On The Run (Fairly old)
The difference in quality was stark. The PS3 was a vast and noticeable improvement over the 360 and was commented on. In fact the 360 looked poor quality for DVD playback.
This bears out what I have found at home as well. The 360 is a poor DVD player.
In fact neither machine under my main TV (PS3 or 360) are as good as the standalone Panasonic unit I have when playing back DVD
