Hi my new PC can't take IDE drives so that rules out the pioneers, what is the best Sata DVD writer to be able to burn 360 backups? TIA

I think you really should get the Pioneer 111D with a IDE PCI card..

in my testing, and i am incredibly anal about the burn quality, the pioneer 111d w/ the dangerous brother 1.29fw creates burns that are better than or equal to pressed media when using nero's cd-speed and the quality test on a benq1655 (one of the better dvd-rws to do a quality test on). i too would use a 111d w/ a pci ide card. i think pioneer just put out a sata dvd-rw but haven't seen any reviews, i think it is the dvr-212d but not too sure about all the specs

look at the pinned, the pioneer seems still the leader in terms of burn quality and consistency.

Less than $20 for an internal card that lets you use IDE drives....

I say - pick up the $20 card and go for the drive you can trust ! Why chance it.

I have to concur with the above. The Pioneer definitely stands out for burn quality. If you are dead set against the IDE adapter, then look into the new Pioneer SATA drive that is out. *EDIT* Speaking of which, here it is:

Another option might be to get the Pioneer and an IDE to SATA adapter. I've run a few burners in this fashion and I haven't run into any issues burning discs. The mileage with your SATA chipset may vary.

The advice here so far has been great however I would recommend that you go with an External USB 2.0 case and put the Pioneer in that. No point installing an IDE controller card for just this. Plus, why would you want to take a step backwards in technology? No point wasting a PCI slot when you have USB. The external case will probably cost you the same as an internal card and you get the benefit of using it on any computer (in the event you have multiple computers). Just plug in and use.

Ok, got my SH-S183L today, and it seems it's writing to this DL at 2.4x. According to the webspecs, it should handle up to 8x; my IDE burners all did 4x on these same discs. Anybody know if it's something to do with it being Sata?

SATA should technically be faster than IDE. If that burner isn't burning DL discs higher than 2.4x it's most likely because of a limitation in the firmware. I'd go and see if there's an update for it.

Yup, it could easily be the firmware. Or it could simply be a limitation of the burner itself. Most burners will do 2.4x official Verbatim DL at up to 8x these days though.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think with the new xtreme 5.2 firmware, bitsetting is not required, if you are using a samsung drive that is. Just a thought.
