Hey guys, quick question.

I installed the NXE and wanted to try and play an Xvid file in a .avi container. When I try to load the video either off of a disc OR a network share, the console says I need a media update from LIVE to play it, and to play it after I sign into LIVE.

Since no LIVE til the 19th, I cannot do this.

SO I am assuming:
A - I never installed the Xvid update as I don't THINK Ive ever played an xvid on my 360 before, or
B - NXE cleared the Xvid update.

I am thinking of going to my friends and downloading it under my gamertag, saving it on to a usb, and bringing it to my home 360. Would that work?

Are there easier solutions?

Thanks.

you'll have to wait till the 19th to get the media update, no other way around it.

I guess the next question is...does installing nxe disable the media update?

I need to be sure that installing nxe doesn't negate my ability to play xvid files before I'll upgrade. I'm not that concerned with being without live for 2 weeks, but watching videos streamed from your original xbox through the 360 is so much nicer than viewing them from the original xbox. Especially with a Logitech 360 remote! wink.gif No fumbling with controllers, etc.

I learned this the hard way. Me and my girlfriend were to watch Transformers from my flash drive. Told me I needed a media update, so I got my lazy ass up and went to the living room and got the dvd.

I do feel proud though, I go down to Wal-mart and buy 720p Bluray movies. My friends come over and are like "Wow nice Bluray collection, where is your PS3?" I pull out my ripped copy of them and pop it in my Xbox and viola, Bluray on 360, on a single layer dvd.

You do have to cut the audio down from 5.1 to 4.1 but it is well worth it.

I have to wait for the media update to play them again though sleep.gif

Wow dude, that must be nice. But you do lose vid quality correct? Blu Ray has more than a single layer zize of video, so you are using DVD Shrink or something right?

BTW, you might want to try some other codec like VC-1 (which some Blu-ray movies are already encoded in, but of course there is nothing wrong with reencoding them into 720p with VC-1). I find that with HD movies it seems to fair a little bit better than XViD.

No quality is lost at all, so long as it is just a 720p bluray movie. The move by it's self weigs in just small enough to fit on on a single layer DVD, Iron Man for example after I dropped the bonus features and menus it was like 4.4gb.

The container just needs to be changed to MP4(no video transcoding required), and the audio has to be chopped down from 5.1 to 4.1.

I use a little tool called XenonMKV and it does the container changing and audio cutting fairly quickly.

It's actually only 2.0 not 4.1.

Interesting...I have not gotten into Blu Ray yet and I thought they all were 1080p naturally and just got scaled down to 720p if you chose it.

So question, would a BluRay movie look better at 720p/1080i scaled down from a 1080p disc, or at 720p on a 720p disc? Does it matter?
