I don't know if Poker should or shouldn't be called a sport. But there are alot of other competitions that I would remove from the sport category if you remove poker. Even if a competition is physical, some competitions just don't seem like they should be called sports.

Figure Skating
Louge & Bob Sledding
Swimming
Running
You get the picture.

These are all competitions, but they aren't really sports.

Sports should be physical.
Sports should be complex, and have lots of rules.

Running the 100 meter dash isn't a sport, but racing the datona 500 is a sport. Running 100 meters is simple, it is a simple speed competition. Racing the datona 500 is complex, it requires a team, a great driver, a great car, luck, physical endurance, mental toughness, alot of skill, and to follow alot of rules.

So my defination of sport is:
A direct and real time human competition of atleast a reasonably physical nature that is guided by a complex set of rules, and has a clear nonjudgmental goal.

With this definition, nothing would be a sport unless 2 or more oponents were competing at the same time. Also, no judge scored events would be termed "sports". So alot of the olimpic "sports" would really be olimpic events or competitions.

So, according to my dictionary, poker could be a sport under definition 3, but I like my definition better. Too bad language isn't black and white, too damn many grey areas.

Like I said ..Bitch at websters not me...thats what the dictionary says.

Me, I dont think its a sport at all. I think its a card game plain and simple.

"only a moron with no skills in poker would say such a thing"

Are you saying I have no poker skills?

When have you sat a poker table with me?

Only a dumb shit would say that.

What intrigues me most is the most popular threads in the Pro Sports forum are about Poker and Paintball.

Poker being in sports forums is a tad strange. Poker being popular in forums does not suprise me.

There is so much to discuss about poker.
Hand analysis being the big one. Bad beat stories and poker theory is quite popular as well. Thanks to televised events, poker has exploded onto pretty much every scene. Over the past 2 years I have played with 60 year olds, as well as 13 year olds.

I like that you didn't take the time to read what I posted. I gave a reason why I think Nascar is a sport, and why track and field isn't, so unless you want to dispute my reasoning(my definition), you are just going to come off as a dumbass who can't read or argue a point effectivly.

If you don't like my definition, that is fine, but my definition is just as valid as any. There are no official definitions, and even those definitions listed in a dictionary are contridictory.

Under my definition it is much clearer what a sport is, and under that definition Nascar would be a sport, and track and field would not.

If you want to argue with me argue with the definition, say why you disagree with the definition.

Also, just because something isn't a sport that doesn't make it any less valuable or entertaining.

My revised definition: (just added the strategy part)
A direct and real time human competition of atleast a reasonably physical nature that is guided by a complex set of rules, involves strategy, and has a clear nonjudgmental goal.

Just because it's your definition? That deosn't really make sense. If that was the case then we could make taking a piss a sport.

I dont think pissing would be conisdered a reasonable physical activity. Plus, I don't think many would consider it a competition. Also, where is the strategy?

Well you could make it competetive. You no when you go to the fair or amusement park they have those thing games where you shoot water at it and the thing rises. You could do the samething only w/ pissing. The more pressure that is applied the fatser it rises. By your definition that is competetive and physical (the power of your stream).

I'm not trying to my smart or disguisting I am just giving you an example.

Well, just add some complex rules, and you just invented yourself a sport.

By the way, your "sport" also fits the dictionary.com definitions.

Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

or

An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

or

An active pastime; recreation

So, your arguement may be valid, but inorder to make a definition that would be as specifc as you want we would be working on a book.

My definition is alot more specific, but will all definitions, you will need to apply a little common sence.
