maybe they will just use another disc structure for their games?i guess you all know that every disc has about 1gb of unused space (video padding or something similar, that's why no installed game has over 6gb,although the iso is 7,3gb in size),so more space for developers to use in their games.

Bayonetta is 6.8GB installed, Wanted WOF is 6.79GB installed. You they have the dashboard update which is ~100MB and the video which is displayed if you instert the disc into a DVD player. So they aren't wasting that much space, so I imagine this is solely for stopping backups and they may make a few other tweaks while they are at it.

i don't think this is possible.why didn't they update all the 73450c and 83850c liteon drives to 93450c back in september 09?the 93450c was "unhackable" for quite some time (almost 3 months),and the MRA hack is not something everybody can pull off.

I believe it is possible for them to flash a drive from the console, i'm sure Redline99 commented on it over on XH when people were asking him if he could add drive flashing to Xellous. Xellous can instruct a drive to store any DVD key in it's firmware as it is, and if the console can do that it's likely it can flash new firmware to the drive.

I imagine they have two major risks. One is that it could brick drives, the other is that people could reverse engineer the update and then use JTAG's to flash drives.

We all know MS is a US company but i am getting sick and tired of the way they treat everyone else UK has been a massive supporter of the 360 and we get nothing just price hikes.

I don't think this stuff about media is to do with disc protection

What do you think it is then? They can't add capacity without new hardware so what else could they be doing to the disk format then adding some type of new DRM?

2 pages of foolish conspiracy assumption AP2.5 BS....what a surprise.

More than likely they just want to start using all 7.95GB for data (well 7.85, if we allow them 100mb for the video partition as that does serve a purpose).

Currently stuck using 6.91GB

I find this very interesting since whatever they do needs to be compatible with all old drives which are still just DVD drives. So what kind of major changes can they make while still keeping this compatible with old systems?

I am going to be interested to hear details as more is learned.

Why? All they do is include the needed update on the disc. It installs it installs it and even those xboxses that are offline can use the new format.

I believe the first wave of AP25 was just a trial to see if it works on a large scale. I believe what MS will do is give each system a different set of AP25 challenges. Either randomised on install, randomised when downloading from the live network, or only a subset used based on a hash of the console serial number. If they did this, it would be impossible to extract every possible challenge from all systems. Even if we could, we wouldn't be able to fit the table on the disc.

Another possibility is the new disc format somehow doesn't allow for any room for these challenge tables to be stored in the first place.

I'd say it's definitely the end of backups, I'm only surprised it took MS this long. I guess they liked the fact the piracy increased their console marketshare in the beginning.

They may render current drive firmwares obsolete (what doesn't mean they can't be updated over time) and harden xbox live but they need to provide compatibility to old disc format nevertheless. If new games XEXs don't enforce the new format you could always reassemble/recreate the ISO to old format. That would kill xbox live play for sure but would save offline play at least.

You are still limited to what the hardware of a DVD drive can do. If hardware stays the same there is limited format changes that can be made.

any disc that can be read, in order to play, can be dumped. it's just a matter of pulling the right strings to do it. 30+ years of experience proves this, whether from a 5.25" floppy, a cd or a dvd.

this comment is almost as silly as the one that "didn't like the sounds of" the updates possibly rendering a system inoperable.

again, decades of M$ windoze updates proves that is pretty much business-as usual for the kids from redmond.

reason #1 why i love my linux and my jtag.

nothing to see here...
