This has been a learning experience. A slow painful one, but still I'm laerning. I ordered a duo X2 at the start of the year. Yes I have been floundering that long smile.gif I get the chip installed and it boots up fine. A couple of minutes later ... look pretty smoke. A trace had burned on the mod-chip. I finally get through the RMA process and recieve a chip this week. Install the new chip and it works. I flash the 2 banks with new bios and amazingly everything is still working. Go to bed and the next day, I drop in a new Hard drive and I get an error 16. Do some reading and searching. Ok thats just a date issue. Put in original HD, fix date/time. Put back in the new 200gb HD and now I get error 13. Understandable since the HD is blank and no dash at all. I burn a cheap cdrw (staples brand cheap) with an auto-installer. Drop the cd in and ... error 13. The xbox is a v1.0 with a Thomson drive so not reading a disk isn't a huge shock to me. I try burning a dvd, to be honest I don't remember if it was +/- just know it was a maxwell. Put in DVD and error 13. Try another installer on dvd and cd-rw still no luck. I put the orginal xbox HD back in to check if my coaster burning abilities. I get a message basically saying "WTF, no yuo! can't read this crap :/" So i'm guessing its me that sucks. I do some more reading ... I think the following are my options:
1. Do the pot tweak on the Thomson
2. Try with buning some more discs (like some fuji's from Japan)
3. Upgrading the NEC-2510 A's (dvd writer) bios to a hacked/ tweaked version
4. Try the paralell dvd-rom http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/swap-dvd.php

I'm leaning towards option 4, but I have no spare dvd-rom so i'm wondering if a cd-rom would work the same way. I don't see why not and I could try a few of the coasters that I have already made. If it does work and I get a dash installed I'm still stuck with a crap? drive, but I can live with ftp.

Is there any other options that I am missing? Am I way off in my thought process?

What installer are you using? secondly burn the disk at once and finalize it. And make sure that whatever you are burning has a default.xbe to load up when the cd is inserted. A regular cd will not work with a thompson only cd-rw's and dvds you are basically burning the disk wrong if you have already flashed the chip with a hacked bios.

Are you sure the bios flash worked ok and the hacked bios is booting up evoxshield? Xecuter2 logo?
If yes then defo use another brand of disc. Try DVD-R

I tried 3 different installers, Slayer's, Auto Installer Deluxe, and the German xbox board one.

I used a cd-rw (crappy staples' brand cd-rw's)

I burned the discs with the following options, no multi-sessions, strict joliet, finalized

I can't remember which is bank 0 and 1 but with the switch up the evox shield shows up on boot and with the switch down the Xecuter shows up on boot. Eject button brings up the original bios.

I'm going to pick up some fuji's DVD-R's on the way home. Hopefully I won't have to dig too far to find a JP on the UPC barcode.

The good news I'm not burning coasters, the bad the thomson drive is useless.

I picked up some fuji (made in japan) dvd-r's last night. I burned 2 installers. and tried it in the xbox. No luck with either. Figure what the heck and try using a pc cdrom in paralell ie power cable still in the xbox dvd-rom and ide cable to the cd-rom powered by a splitter. Um yeah that didn't work biggrin.gif I took the thomson drive out and tried the pot tweak. got the pot ~850 ohms. Put it back in the xbox and no luck. Its been spotty reading original disks any ways. I break down pull a dvd-rom out of a computer and do the same paralell trick again. Everything I burn't reads just fine. I do my format and install merrily away. Now I just need to figure out a decent looking permanent solution.
