Ok i'll point it out plain and simple.

Put in a chip for a friend, his box is a 1.2 or something around there and just put in a duo x2. Its been working fine for months but now it has started fragging randomly. He brought it back to me and i didn't really know what to do. I tried a different chip but same problem, so i moved onto the solder joints. They all looked good but i redid them anyway. It worked after a few tests then he took it home. An hour later, he was back.

I found some finer solder and redid the points again and it worked for about 50 tests. He took it home and a day latyer, it was fragging again. I have no idea what to do as i have these solder connections looking very neat. Apparently his brother tried it in a different room and then it worked, but it just seems to be random.

What the hell could it be other than solder joints, cos they're all fine! Thanks heaps, any help would be great!

it could be that when you moved it the chip gets loose or slightly out of place
cause it seems to frag after it gets to his house and its fine when it gets to you because you have taken it off and repositioned it
my friends chip did this and i couldnt figure it out so i taped it down and it hasent had a problem yet

You should be able to wiggle the chip around alot and not have a problem. If it's this picky then i reckon you need to resolder the feamle headerpin where it attaches to the duox2 ( these are all the solder points on the top of the duox2 )

HackDaBox !

PS heat em up and add a touch more solder ! then wiggle and move the chip left and right and then try booting again !

hmm, the tape thing sounds like an idea, though tacky.

The idea about the female headerpin being loose sounds right, but different chips don't work either, i might replace it though and see how it goes.

Thanks, still looking for ideas though

Reflow each pin on the female receptcal and when the solder goes molten tap the pin with your iron and a good pin wont move. If a pin feels squishy then that's the pin that's the problem. Do this while it's on the male header you want.

If different chips don't work it rules out the female header on the chip. Intermittent problems like this are nearly always down to bad soldered connections using too low a powered iron. they look ok from the top but the solder has not flowed correctly. the problem is with an aspect of the install as trying other chips also rules out the chip

Yeah I was thinking that. I might use the solder sucker and just start again. The low powered iron thing could be an idea cos ours has been playing up lately.

I guess i'll just try resoldering, again tongue.gif
