I was thinking about modding an Xbox so I can play a few backups and clips encoded in Divx and Xvid on my 56" HDTV. I tried an old laptop with TVOUT and the quality was rather horrible. Does anyone have any pictures of image quality on the tv?

I assume you'll be using the latest XBMC build, if not, I recommend it. The quality of the xvid/divx encoding will affect the quality of the picture on the television. In general, the quality on the television is quite good.

To be truthful, with a well encoded DivX, Xvid, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference, and you would have a smaller file size, the Divx can look a little softer but that is about it.

Say you have one of those 700mb encodes of a film, they are usually pretty much close to DVD quality.
Also all those anime releases you see that are around 150mb-200mb+ are usually DVD quality aswell.

Dont compare your Xbox to a crummy laptops TV-Out, just make sure you use the best Xbox > TV connection you can (Eg S-Video, RGB Scart, component, etc).
