I have been reading this article and am a bit confused. Will I still be able to flash my Hitachi drive that was made in Sept 06? I can't tell if this glue stuff will stop flashing completely or if it just stops the chip being changed.

the glue just prevents the chip from being removed to be read and flashed. Depending on the drive version, you should still be able to flash it through dos.

Made in Sept 06....it's probably a 0078fk...which is only flashable with an external programmer after desoldering the chip. I think thats when the black glue stuff started appearing.

Meaning it can't be done then?

It can...like I said...by removing the glue, desoldering the chip, programming with an external programmer, and resoldering of the chip. Not quite like the other Hitachi's...but it isn't "impossible"....just not very easy.

Sorry I meant it can't be done without messing about with it. Thanks for the advice. Very useful.

once one of the genius hackers update the firmware to the new hitachi, you will be able to flash it like normal. dont worry about the glue.

I thought the issue is that the drive cannot be put into the mode where you can read/write the FW. Perhaps there may be a work around but it will not be simple.

If you just bough it you can exchange it for another unit and pray for a sammy.

( Note to mods: Most stores offer a 30 day NQA return/exchange policy. This means you can return the item with no questions asked, for any reason that you want. Do not send me a warning for pointing out a right afforded to any consumer. Seem http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=538459#37441 for an example)
