Gamers, Our Brains Are Limited To Tracking 8 Objects At Once
Posted by XanTium | November 1 20:54 EST | News Category: GamingGeneral

From kotaku.com:
[QUOTE]
Researchers long believed that human perception was limited to tracking four moving objects at one time. But a new study, challenging participants to follow 16 dots moving at a very slow pace on a computer screen, found that participants were able to track up to eight objects at once (or double what we previously thought possible).

The major downfall of our ability to track objects is speed. Because once these dots hit the on-screen speed of 0.15 metres per second, subjects were only able to track one dot at a time.

Well hopefully in Halo 3 you don't have to watch more than 8 enemies at a time. smile.gif Shoot em before they all appear! That's why big team battle is hard...

Too true - watched some matches on YouTube, they are NUTS. Which they did some Company of Heroes championships, that game has awesome micro-management and looks freaking sexy

But back to topic - that would explain why i can't beat much over 350,000 on Geometry Wars.....

there was a game which you had to move your cursor to dodge moving balls on screen.

i used to die mostly when 9 was on, got the odd 12 or so, but the mean was about 9 balls.

interesting stuff.

"Researchers long believed that human perception was limited to tracking four moving objects at one time. But...................."

Question I have on this is:
Did they use the exact same speed on the objects when they thought we could track 4 objects compared to now when they find we can track 8 objects? I wouldn't think it would take much of a difference at all in speed (and direction of objects) to make a LARGE difference in how many objects we could track at one time. I assume the object movement was completely random (would have to be that way for a complete and comprehensive study).

On another note:
"is this why Womens beach volly ball has only 4 players"
Now THAT'S FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope they included young age groups in the test, general rule of thumb the younger you are the more sharp you are and you can learn quicker than most adults..
