I've been reading through here as a guest quite frequently, and I am planning on designing my own "mini-box" out of CAD software that I have. It will have the same components as Ghostavel's, but I like to have a disc drive, so I'm using an old laptop drive. My only question is about the PSU. Do I need to use a PICO PSU, and if so, which model? Can someone point me in the right direction? (Oh, and by the way, I have a 1.6 and an older version {Don't know which version, has old PSU connector and no holes in the disc drive tray, along with a mini CPU fan for the smaller heat sinc} Thanks.

You'd need a custom psu for the 1.6 xbox, as it gets most of its power through the standby 3.3v line. Your xbox v1.0 is a better option. The psu used by most is the pw-200-m but it's getting rare (http://www.mini-box.com/PW-200M-DC-DC-power-supply)

They have a new 160w picopsu(http://www.mini-box.com/picoPSU-160-XT) that's able to output 8A on the 5v line, perfect for the xbox. The 80w version works as well, but just barely. If you really want that dvd drive, i'd suggest using the 160w version.

Correct, though the v1.6 has a 5v standby line, too. I thought most of the amperage was pulled through that rail.

My mistake, it's indeed the 5v standby that provides most of the power.

For the 1.6, I've been trying to get together a custom supply design relying upon a 5v supply.
I asked for what I needed on an electronics forum, and they quickly responded with this:

If you aren't afraid of building circuits, and trying something as of yet untested, that could certainly be worth a try. Depending on how you source your components, I think it's between $15 and $50 to build the circuit, and then you need to come up with a 20-25A 5v supply (100W-125W) This should be fairly simple to come up with if you aren't worried much about looks of it, and just mod a PC PSU.
It has the advantage of not relying upon hard to find converters, and not having half of it's voltages not matter.

Just a hint, TI will let you sample a few products of theirs, so you can know if it will work in your designs... May be worth looking into. wink.gif
