I'm not looking off anything but I believe that's a V5. I guess those can boot +RW.

unsure.gif Does anybody know if a V3 PS2 can play DVD+R disks?
I'm planning of buying an DVD burner (for the Xbox en PS2 games) and I would really like to go for an +R(W) drive, but the PS2 will need to play this (with Messiah mod).
Otherwhise I would go for an Pioneer DVR-104 (DVD-R(W).

Well I'm bumping this back to the top. And I"ll add my questions under this post.

In ppl's opinions it seems ppl like the Pioneer better, and theres a huge -r and +r argument.

If you were to get one right now which would you get?

I"m interested in one, but I"m also thinking of waiting for a standard to adopt, better speeds, and better technology.... not to mention cheaper smile.gif

In researching this topic I ran across an article which tested compatibility of DVD-R / DVD-RW / DVD+RW in tons of dvd players (DVD+R didn't exist at the time of the article's writing). DVD-R's were able to play in 99% of all players, whereas DVD-RW and DVD+RW were both able to play in only 3 of the players tested (The xbox can play all three of course).

I'm sure that DVD+R has better compatibility than DVD+RW (It better!) but the availability of the media is not great, unlike DVD-R's which are cheap and easy to find (My grocery store even has some!).

The point of my post is that as far as compatibility arguments go... DVD-RW and DVD+RW are the same, and DVD-R is infinitely better. It is ironic as the whole basis behind DVD+RW was to be compatible. It also bothers me that implementation of DVD+R seems almost an afterthought.

I say buy the pioneer 104. I've had no problems with it, and movies I've burned have worked everywhere.

It's only a little over $300 anyway, and the media can be bought for $1.25 bulk these days.

just my 2cents

I've got the Pioneer 04... bought it as a pre-release ($750) last year and have had no regrets... dvd-rs (movies) work on all my home players and data discs read in all the pcs I've ran them in.

Heck, it's been fun ripping my original Star Wars lasers to DVDs as "backup" since they aren't even out yet on regular DVD...and they play in most everyone's players.

One place that has 'em for $312.. but you'll find others for less than $350 ...

use: www.pricewatch.com or www.streetprices.com to find good prices.

Media: $2.39 singles, you can save $ by buying bulk packs.
I'm still using up a bunch of the Apple DVD-Rs I bought with my unit and haven't tested other brands.
