Broken Dvd Drive Options

Hey guys, I have had three xbox 360's since launch. Long story short 2 of them broke. One of them however is working but the dvd drive was ruined (Wouldn't open or read movies/games) I ended up throwing the dvd drive away which I realize now was a big mistake. Is there anyway I can get a dvd drive for it? I know they are tied to the motherboard sort of like how windows cdkey ties to the mobo.

I'd love to do some modding or run this side by side inside my computer case. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Did you ever update the dashboard on the console without the DVD-ROM? If the answer is no, do not let that thing go anywhere near LIVE and we can move from there.

No, after the dvd I stopped using it completely. It's still on the old old dashboard. I really don't care about xbox live as I have a slim for that. How do I proceed?

You'll need to perform the JTAG/SMC hack. It's relatively simple as far as modding goes, but you'd be well advised to do quite a bit of reading. You will need to either build or purchase hardware for the purposes of this hack. GIYF for those purposes. Come back once you get a grip on things and we can go from there.

Thanks for all of the replies however I just looked at the system info and it seems it's on dashboard ver. 2.0.9199.0 As far as I have read its impossible to JTAG 9199. Is there anything else I could do?

You can RGH it at this point, which requires you to buy a chip. Or send it off and have someone retrieve the key for you.

I've been doing a lot of reading however most of the info is incomplete. I seem to have an Xenon I know that much so far but I have no idea which chip I need. I found one called the coolrunner rgh2.0 but it does not state that it functions on the Xenon version. If someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. I've also read that once this is done that you can boot off of HD or Flash memory is this true? It could very well solve my missing dvd drive problem.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think the most you can do with the RGH is get a DVD KEY with a xenon. Guess it will boot into xell and thats about it.

My understanding is that glitches on Xenons are horribly inconsistent, perhaps worse than Zephyrs, so they're only useful for retrieving CPU/DVD keys.
