Ok so my 360 has the x-clamp fix biggrin.gif and its working great. Now Ive decided to do some "modding" i am going to add some metal mesh (http://www.mnpctech.com/moddersmesh.html) on the sides, (like this xbox, http://forums.xbox-scene.com/lofiversion/i...p/t631162.html) a small fan on the CPU heat sink (blowing through to the exhaust fans) and a intake fan (don't really know where.) I need some ideas.
1. Size of fans.I don't know what size to use on the CPU heat sink. my intake fan will probably be 120mm (or is that to big?)
*My xbox works fine, this is for fun/something cool/better cooling to do*
2. Power. I want to power the fans separately/externally (i.e. not the brick) Ill get my fans online (like ebay or newegg or something) Will something like this (with splitters) work? http://www.coolerguys.com/840556029977.html
3. Intake fan. Where is the best place to put it?

Thx.

KK

just look for a fan splitter it would be cheaper

unless u take out the dvd drive and mount it externally you wont get a 120mm fan in the xbox

best place to put fans to draw air in is the side you can stand it up on

40mm fans and 60mm fans are probably around the size you want

I saw someone in my street cutting holes in his 360 with a Dremel yesterday. I stopped for a chat and he told me he was ding this mod.

Is that you KK?

I want to be able to power the 12v fans externally so i can turn them off when i want (without adding switches) and not draw extra power from the mobo. And i think newegg sells a cheaper one than that. No that was not me cutting the xbox. So a 60mm fan will be the right size to sit up against the CPU heat sink? And how can i cool the GPU better (besides putting a better exhaust fan)? I was thinking of making the dvd external. Is that really worth the trouble?

Thx.

You could try putting a piece of plastic or cardboard inbetween each fan to allow one fan to cool one heatsink.

If you want you could make the dvd drive external as you said, but if you want it to keep looking good, then i suggest you go to alot of effort to make a custom case for the dvd drive.

With that said you can then add a cpu heatsink to the gpu and make up a custom fan tunnel to suit the new gpu heatsink. smile.gif

OK so take the gpu heat sink off and put a CPU heat sink on? I have the launch xbox 360, so it doesn't have the "better" gpu heat sink. With a CPU heat sink on, a fan fits up next to it well. and fixing the fan shroud to accommodate that isn't hard. And what things should/can i do to make the DVD drive look better?

I guess your not the guy I met in Calluna drive the other day then?

I wouldn't worry about the fan drawing extra power, were talking miliamps here so its not going to make a difference to your power consumption. The easy way to do it is found in this thread: Here. For me the better way to do it would be to tap into the 12v right under the power connector, see here. If you wanted you could add a 7809 regulator to drop the fan voltage to 9v. Either way its optimum to take the voltage right off the power connector IMHO.

Good luck with the mods.

Hey thx. The 12v spots are perfect. And is a whisper max fan better than 2 80mm fans?

To make the dvd drive look better, i would suggest putting it in a HD DVD drive case or making a basic plastic shell and bondo the crap out of it.

OK so here is my mod ideas so far. INSIDE: 60mm fan on cpu heatsink. Cpu heatsink on gpu with same fan. 2 80mm intake fans on right (if horizontal) side. DVD drive external. OUTSIDE. Mesh and plexi windows IPB Image
IPB Image
not with the bull dog but thats what it looks like (thx mnpctech)
DVD drive external and enclosed

LED's?

I can't find just a hd dvd shell case, only whole drive (ebay even). Any place that would have them? If not ill just get a plastic ensloser from somewhere. And all i need 4 the drive is a sata cable and what kind of power cable?
Does that sound right? And is there any specific size of heatsink 4 the gpu?

Thx

For the heatsink try and find the same one as the cpu has on it so basically a cpu heatsink replacement but put it on the gpu. (both the gpu and cpu should have the same heatsink).

LEDs are colourful, and i like colour so i suggest put some in.

Im really like the plexi and mesh idea.

With the HD DVD drive if the ones on ebay are cheap enough then i suggest go for it.
For the power cable just cut them and add more wire in the middle
