If you already have your account setup you don't even need a stock C to coldboot for live.. Thats the whole concept of coldbooting..

Look in krayzie's sig for some softmod basic's, and a little n00b training.

Cold booting is the act of having the game in the dvd tray and then switching the xbox on.

By default a retail kernal loads the dvd first. therefor bypassing the xboxdash.xbe file, in turn never loading the hacked fonts, and nkpatcher never gets loaded.

At this moment you are in a retail state, aside from the the hd of course. also look for angerwound's softmod & XBL guide in the tutorial pinned above.

I re-read through a lot of those links, and I've been slightly more n00b trained cool.gif

To answer trigger's question above: NO I do not have my Live account setup. I also noticed in the XBL Faq it states

QUOTE
So how do I access XBOX Live after installing UXE?
Well, first of all you will need your Live Account. If you don't have your account saved to a memory card or already on your console then you will need to copy back the original 'xboxdash.xbe' and RETAIL fonts back to the 'C' partition.
Boot the console to the RETAIL dashboard and do an Account Recovery to get access to your Gamertag.

So it still seems that I have to get back to the default, MS dash?

edit: reading "M$ dash setup using Shadow C" tut now wink.gif

@Kai920: you've been doing remarkably well - your situation is rare as is your desire to be part of the solution. Also, the patience you have is amazing, which is good as I suspect it's about to be stretched even further...

Based on this thread and your subsequent posts it seems that, in addition to setting the region, you're also going to need to establish the (real C) retail dashboard and register for Live! Consequently, my recommendation is:

(!) make sure you have a good backup of at least your shadowC and eeprom.bin on your PC
...
(i) set your region (to 2) so you can cold-boot your NTSC-J MA
(ii) install a simple MA gamesave exploit (which wouldn't use C at all)
(iii) confirm that the MA exploit works!
(iv) ftp the current (real) C to your PC
... hmm, I think that's all the necessary prep! ...
(v) replace the (real) C content with the entire shadowC dashboard (PC backup)
(vi) reboot and check that the Live tab (online dashboard) works, letting it update if it needs to
(vii) cold-boot TopSpin, register for live and enjoy smile.gif
... when enclined ...
(viii) cold-boot the MA exploit (and backup C to yor PC if live updated it)
(ix) re/install the/a UXE based exploit and confirm it works
(x) cold-boot TopSpin for live and confirm that it can still connect

Hopefully others will notice any mistakes I may have made and post accordingly eh...

I think he can't edit cuz maybe his nkpatcher is set to virtual eeprom but there is no eeprom file which results in a read only eeprom.

Thanks for the kind words eh, but I wanted to thank you, krayzie, DaddyJ, and countless others who helped me learn to walk. Sure there are lots of n00bs like me around, but the patience from YOU GUYS is nothing short of astounding. beerchug.gif beerchug.gif

I was just about to post and report that I've successfully switched the region to 2, NTSC-J. I followed the tut here and used xberegion and xtools to accomplish the region switch... for some reason, ConfigMagic just didnt work, no matter how hard I tried. ##@!@ YEAH that feels good smile.gif

Now that it's region 2, the first thing I did was coldbooting Top Spin. Result? NO IGR -- hallelujah!!! But then I tried to access XBL, and came up with a blank, black screen. No wonder, I thought, because it's no longer loading shadowC so it's actually looking at my REAL C... which is probably in pretty bad shape.

So, I'm moving onto the next step. As you suggested, it's to "establish the (real C) retail dashboard". If you'll recall... I bought my xbox pre-softmodded. I have a backup of my "already softmodded C drive", that has the MSdash files on it. Now I gotta figure out which files to move on to my "real C".

There's a f0nts and fonts folder. I'm guessing I only need to move the original fonts in f0nts (XBox Book.xtf &
Xbox.xtf) into C:\fonts ?

Other folders are Audio, xodash, and xboxdashdata.xxxxxxx. I'm guessing I need to move these to my "real C" as well.

What's confusing me are the files in the root of backup C:

msdash.xbe (1,916KB)
orig-xboxdash.xbe (1,916KB)
XBox Book.xtf
Xbox.xtf
xboxdash.xbe (1,872KB)

First of all, do I need both the xtf files. They are named the same as the one inside f0nts, but file sizes are different.

Second, which xbe's do I need to keep?! If it helps any, I've included the file sizes above...

Once again, thanks guys, I'm almost there... I can see the finish line up ahead! jester.gif

lol, ok... let's start at the beginning!

(i) set your region (to 2) so you can cold-boot your NTSC-J MA DONE, can coldboot with MA NTSC-J

(ii) install a simple MA gamesave exploit (which wouldn't use C at all) do you mean to simply "put" the exploit onto the E drive or actually INSTALL it? cuz I know some installers will not run unless my C drive was in stock shape.

(iii) confirm that the MA exploit works! see (ii)

(iv) ftp the current (real) C to your PC DONE. basically xboxdash.xbe and a Dashboard folder (from UXE Complete 0.2.1)

Good point; just put it in the game's save directory on E (and by "simple" I'm referring to a minimal, evox type of exploit) eh.

(v) replace the (real) C content with the entire shadowC dashboard (PC backup) DONE!
(vi) reboot and check that the Live tab (online dashboard) works, letting it update if it needs to checking now...

Xbox Live is updating your system. Please don't turn off your xbox console.
Then
Xbox Live not responding. Please try again later.

Network error? Any steps I missed?

(Now you're in a retail-state, existing posts and/or Live forum assistance will almost certainly help you overcome that. I've got to go now; good luck eh.)
