im hearing something new here... What can softmod do what tsopflash cant do? Cause i know that with softmod you cant unlock your xbox hdd. (wich you can do with tsopflash, wich is easier for new hdd's, or when an old hdd crashes or anything)
Still very good to hear this, cause this will save me the trouble of soldering the board, and flashing the bios. biggrin.gif

Thats the only disadvantage of softmod.. it cant have unlocked harddrive.. on the other side.. you cant easily revert to original state if you want.. dual boot to different ash.. mount .iso dircetly if you have a game with long characters..etc.

Hi all,

Well done to all, Excellant tutorial.

I followed the steps and modded about a month ago, everything has been working fine. My kids have been using the unleash dash to play games and the xbox dash for live, yesterday though I came across a slight problem.
My kids were playing games, i'm not sure exactly what they were doing at the time, but now the xbox dash comes up to error saying "your xbox needs servicing". When you press the eject button the dvd drawer ejects and you get the exploding screen, but as the drawer is closing again it stops half way for about a second and then you get the red and green flashing ring with the message on the screen, when using the unleash dash everything works fine though.

I read all 60 odd pages of this forum before attempting the mod and know i saw something similar posted and what needed to be done to fix it, although i can't seem to find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

probably retail ms dash files got corrupt or game changed some files. Run C:\ndts\default.xbe and check if the xboxdashdata.185ead00 and xodash folderare present.. also check if xb0xdash.xbe file is there. If there is a folder called xboxdashdata.du then delete the folder and from your copy of xboxdash ( maybe from slayers disk) upload xboxdashdata.185ead00 folder to C:\ drive.

Thanks Kingroach,

All sorted now, thats exactly what it was, there was a different "xboxdashdata" file and also had an "xboxdashdata.du" file there as well.
Not sure if this matters but there was a "fonts.du" file also, should this stay or go.

Once again, thanks for the help.

Ok first of all I got to say that the tut is good. I was able to follow the step and get my Xbox modded. I came across some problems though;

During the installation part it said that the space on C was full and started copying some things to the shadow drive.

It finished what a couple more error messages:

Write error no space left on drive
MKdir cannot create directory ' /xbox/C/shadowc/resc' : No space left on drive
unable to open ' /xbox/C/shadowc/resc/default.xbe' :No such file or directory
unable to open ' /xbox/C/shadowc/resc/evox.ini' : No such file or directory

What do these error messages mean?

When I use the power butten without a disc in the tray, it takes me to the UnleashX Dash, is that the standard or am I supposed to be in evox?

Also when in the MS dash, I can't see my music that was stored before modding. What could have caused these problems and how can I solve them?

Thx in advance

the write error is normal.. With power button, you are supposed to boot into unleashx. You can change the dash by installing new dash in E:\dash\ folder. To get the old music back, go to E:\TDATA\ffe0000\music\ folder. Rename ST.DB to something else like ST3.DB and rename ST2.DB file to ST.DB

Thanks for your quick response.

So the softmod actually went right.

Is there any situation were I would have to rename the ST3.DB back to ST.DB after doing the initial renaming as you explained?

And were is the Ndure toolset (menu). Have been looking for it.

So I have found this folder E:\ndts assuming it's the Ndure toolset. I launched the Unleashx dash there and found the install menu were I tried the de-activate ndure option.

This should turn the softmod off right?

It gave me this error;

Batch process failed
The last item was: .
Action: rename

When in msdash I can do the <<EggsBox>> which takes me to UnleashX after performing the sequence.

Am I doing something wrong in the de-activating?

I just did something stupid. I run the default.xbe in the ndts folder finding that's the Ndure toolset. And tried de-activating ndure. Some infobox came up and disappeared so I selected it again after wich it gave me the same error as above. (

Batch process failed

The last item was: .

Action: rename)

Now powering my xbox without game gives me the "Error 21", I can however start the Xbox with game.

How should I proceed if I want to bring the Xbox back to before I did the softmod? And what if I want the softmod installed again?

I'm having the backup of my c drive and the 5 files created by evox (eeprom.bin, etc)

Thx in advance

Hi,
I've had experience softmodding using the savegame exploit but not with the hotswap technique.

I followed the steps in this tutorial and when i went to boot the xbox with the harddrive reattached i get the exploding x then nothing. No error message or anything, just a black screen. I've tried going through the same process with the same results. I stupidly re-ran the backup procedure which i believe backed up the files that were installed in the previous attempt. So now I have an xbox that wont boot anything. I dont seem to have any problem unlocking the hdd and copying the files so i'm not sure whats going wrong. Any ideas what i'm doing wrong? When in this procedure does the bios patching or whatever occur? Any help would greatly appreciated.
