I think this is good news,.... sounds like my dad (old D&D freak i finally got to play video games) will still be able to play Oblivion while I take my new Xpod HDD player to work.
edit: I think I remember in one of the J Allard interviews him saying that the 12x dvd provides a throughput of 54 mbps or sumthin impressive

Won't some portion be allocated for a cache? At least 850mb of cache will be required for backwardscompatibility with Halo 2 - The literal best selling Xbox title

Well one thing that should be considered is that something not being required, does not mean that the console will be able to do everything it could without it I mean Sure you can go on xbox live without the hdd, but I doubt downloadable content will be supported, or even backwords compatibility for that matter. So I don't nessecarily think this means that there won't be some game down the line the REQUIRES the hard drive.
