I have a fairly new lite (less than 3 months old) and it works fine. I have not changed the firmware or anything like that.

will sandisk micro SD cards work.. or should i just get a kingston SD card instead?

Any MicroSD Card should work. Early on there were reports of Japanese cards working the best. With firmware updates since then, they all seem to be working fine now.
