I'm thinking about getting a PS3 soon since the rumour of them pricedropping and then coming out with a new 'unhackable' model.

If I'm right from what I've gathered online, all you really need now is the CFW and a USB stick to do it, and of course the correct firmware.

Would anyone be able to direct me to a noob-guide, or explain how it's done, and what the best backup manager is? (And whether it still needs an original game in the drive to boot from the internal HDD?)

anyway which firmware you are in now ?

and if you want to play games off hdd internal or external
1-install OFW 3.55 via XMB
2-Install CFW 3.55 via Recovery Mode
3- the best ever backups managers are multiMAN and Rogero Manager
