I got a 20 gig that was working fine until I updated to 2.01. After updating it, I would start up lock up a few minutes after I turned it on. I can't get the new FW (2.10), so I can't tell if that would fix it. I don't want to pay 150 USD to have Sony fix it when they are the ones to broke it.

Anybody else having this type of problem and maybe know how to fix it?

I haven't seen any issues after the 2.01 update and it seems to be a stable upgrade so maybe the PS3 is going faulty.
Have you downloaded the new firmware to disc and tried that way.
have you gone into settings and restored the PS3 settings to factory and formatted the HDD?

I got it to stay on long enough to update to 2.10, but it still locks up. Looks like I'm going to have to send it in. Hopefully, they give me a model that still has the full ps2 compatibility, not a crappy 40 gig.

I'm gonna throw this on the table:
Try a different hdd in it, and see if it lets you complete the update, and then switch back (or keep it in if you want).

See if it works and let us know.
