I'm guessing you want to light up a dvd window or something. While the dvd drive is OPTICAL, you can still add leds. you could even add leds under the dvd for a glow. The dvd drive uses a laser to detect ons and offs (reflection off the cd/no reflection). as long as you don't point a led directly into the sensor, it shouldn't mess anything up. As for a link, I don't know of one. I just thought I would clear up the confusion.

im not sure if there is a tutorial but i remember a guy who took power from a different source, and ran it to a phone jack (i think). he glued the other end to the thing that goes in and out so that the lights went on when the drive closed and were off when the drive opened. I hope this makes sense lol, if not im sure someone here knows what im talking about and knows where the pictures are.

I've been thinking of installing some LED's on the bezel that turn on point towards the disk when opened. How this is done is by putting a wire down the length of the tray, and at the end the bare wire. When opened, the bare wire touches the current and lights the LED, illuminating your disk. =)

Thats a mod Im planning on doing very soon. I'm going to have 2 3mm blue leds drilled into the tray facing towards the disc. When it opens fully both will come on and light up the tray. I was asking about this not long ago but no one gave me any info on it so im assuming theres no tut on how to do it or not many ppl have done it. I have a few ideas how I'm going to do it and i'll do a tut if it works out.

The guy that did something similar I think speed_racer88 is talking about was stevewall (I think). He did that stained glass xbox?. Anyway it was the same idea but in reverse. Was in the forums about 3 months ago if you can find it.

I was thinking of having them in the bezel... But yeah, do you like my idea? I'll draw a crappy picture in a second...

See, the way it's set up, the LED's turn on only when the circuit is complete, which is when the drive is open. When it's closed, it's not.

I stewed on it for awile and I figured out a way to make them run constant all the time or only when the tray is being ejected and out and off when closed or how to make them on when it is closed and shut off when opened also a spot to put a lot of led's inside the case and can run them at 12v or 5v with the correct resistor's of coarse but I can take pic's of the process of making the one that come on when ejected and off when it close's
