Could the bios be being loaded off the hd? cus it must be getting it somwhere, if so couldnt using the 007 hack( or somthing like it) somone design a program to instead of flashing, rewrite the bios??

ahh, if only... that would be the ultimate dream, but that would be a backwards thing to do, not to mention that the system would be non-functional without a hard drive.

secondly, re-writing a BIOS is the same as flashing it; you clear the memory banks and rewrite them with new data.

read the thread people, youll learn some stuff, such as

the bios is stored on the xyclops chip

this is not currently, and probably never will be, flashable

what your talking about sounds like a PBL-style softmod, which is quite possible, but its not a TSOP flash

I find it strange that MS would store there Bios on a chip(Xyclops) that could not be reflashed/reprogrammed. So if the Bios goes corrupt for any reason and the xbox is under warranty, you send it to them, they will simply give you a New Xbox (becuase I doubt they are going to go throught he process of replacing the chip, it would probably cost more) ? Never new MS was nice and not greedy smile.gif

they will send you a new xbox, but then refurbish the one with the corrupt bios (just replace the xyclops chip)

soldering ICs like that is much easier on the industrial level than it is for us at home

they probably just weighed how much money they would spend replacing the xyclops chips vs projected losses due to TSOP modding and did what cost less money

actaully just to clear things up for the noobs and for those who know a little more but not enough..........

the 1.6 does contain a bios

the bios on a 1.6 is inside the xyclops chip

the xyclops chip is a multilayered (4 layers from what our reverse engeneering efforts lead us to belive) the bios is held on one of these layers

yes the bios is updateable by MS, and yes it can be done in circuit, therefore it is possible to flash a hacked onboard bios

it is likely that the xyclops chip is manafactured by "amtel" in conjunction with mo0torola as a custom chip for MS, if this is the case then it would be near impossible to flash it, as the flash adresses would be unlikely to be publicly listed, as this is the whole point of the chip.

Furthurmore it is likely that the chip could be flashed without any soder points without opening the xbox via the usb port, but agian, no flash adresses, no flash.

Basicly, the likelyhood of flashing the xyclops bios is about the same as someone guessing the access number for bill gates personal swiss bank acount.

hmm, thats very interesting, do you have links to this info? im not tryign to refute you or anything i would just liek to read about the revese engineering thats been going on

i would sya theres a chnace the flash adresses or codes could be leaked, but theres about as much chance of that as the private signing key being leaked, lol

Hmm, I wonder if a brute force attack could be tried on the Xyclops chip if this were true. Sure would make my life easier.

its possible, but probably would take far too long to be of any use (like brute force cracking the private signing key)

True, but it would still be nice, then again, we don't even know if it is really flashable. Besides, 1.6s are crap compared to the rest of the revisions, ex. 1.1 (my favorite).
