Thats makes no effin sense.Is the voice control geo-locked? because otherwise a voice recognition system should recognize American and Canadian voices basically similar, though it may not recognize non-american terms like "Please" and "Thank you".

The issue is that they are supporting certain regions and the region accents. There's a pretty good chance that it will work with "Canadian English", but MS isn't ready to support it if it doesn't work properly.

I'm also willing to bet that many people who have English as a second language will have more difficulties with the out-of-the-box recognition. If you don't believe me, you have probably not tried to use any PC-based voice recognition software. The software eventually learns your way of saying things within a certain error percentage.

Long story short, it's not that it won't work, MS just isn't ready to support it.

they have been working on kinect for the last 2 years and now they say
it isnt finnished yet then DONT RELEASE IT YET

next they gonna say we have to wait till fall update 2011 for kinect to reconice leg movement ,that it only reconice arm movements for the time beeing.

kinect is gonna be a big FAIL.

if you got to wait you have to wait, what sense is it to make the other regions wait? I'm sure if it was the other way around you'd feel the same way. Early adopters usually get screwed anyways as I'm sure the ones who have to wait will get something improved or bundled.

the ONLY damn reason to get this thing was voice recognition.
not even one of the launch games is attractive to a gamer. and i have real cats to pet, thank you.
so they just convinced me to wait AT LEAST until voice recognition is enabled here in germany.
i was so curious what kinect can do, but for now it's nothing more than a webcam addon.
i can somehow understand licensing issues here in germany and some other countries that prevent the use of last.fm or netflix or hulu.....or any of the features they are always hyping. really, we only have the zune marketplace with 50-70 movies and NO tv shows or anything. REALLY!!!
but kinect is a feature/addon that belongs to the console and therefore it has to work everywhere. and right out of the box.
damn you M$!!! i am able to speak english!
i even did save some money to buy it on release day.
now i'm gonna take that money and buy me a second ps3 and the jailbreak.
all the time i was defending kinect and did not believe it would flop just like so many other people here and everywhere, but now i do and i won't recommend it to anyone until its full feature set is available here as well.

Just when I think Kinect can't get worse. This is a joke. The whole thing is a big giant joke. You buy this day one and I guarantee this thing is going to be FULL of problems.

I wasn't going to get Kinect anyway, but as a Canadian I am utterly offended. Canadian English not supported? Fu*k you Microsoft. I speak perfect english, EXACTLY the same as any American and I dare say in Canada there are far fewer accents then in the USA. I mean this is voice recognition for the XBOX! It's not like it has to support dictating memos!! No excuse. And if this is because of the damn french in Quebec, then don't launch the thing in Quebec.

If it has the capacity to recognize American accents, then Canadian english should be a walk in the park. Our english is recognized around the world as the most articulate.

Kinect is just another item to add to the Xbox's sea of useless features.

If it cant work accurately with a Canadian accent then it's got absolutely no chance of working here in Scotland! . And what about the many very different regional accents throughout the UK? Will I have to speak like the queen for it to understand me? .

Why not just make the speech recognition feature user programmable? Have it set default to American English and allow the user to make Kinect learn if there's anything it gets confused with. Speech recognition is nothing new!, why the problems all of a sudden? My Gamecube, Dreamcast and original Xbox all had speech recognition games that worked fine and could "learn" my commands.

I bet it would work for English speaking Canadians, but they aren't allowed to enable it for them until they get Quebec French working too or they'll flip out.
