i keep hearing that 480i looks terrible compared to 720p but all the people i hear this from have only tried 480i on their HD sets, am i right in thinking that 480i will look better on a notmal TV than it will on a HDTV?

well 720p is a higher resolution, so there is goign to be much mroe detail in it.

but if you dont have a hd set, then 480i/p is the way to go, unless it will display 720p (which i doubt it will, even if you can hook the xbox up to it with teh component cables)

it depends on the HDTV... some HDTVs display 480i very well, others display it like total crap

One car can go 30 MPH... anothe car can go 100MPH... which car has more comfortable seats?

I'm curious to know you you heard from is only using 480i on their HD sets?!?! I play games either in 720p or 1080i on my TV. My TV is capable of providing 1080p, so I can't wait for PS3 to come out to see what 1080p will look like...apparently it will be capable of supporting it.

The problem with 480i is a 4:3 aspect ratio(regular square screen), and most hsdtv's are 16:9(widescreen). So if you stretch the image to fit a hdtv screen it looks like crap(compared to 720p or 1080i which are 16:9). Anyway you are trying to compare apples to oranges tongue.gif HDTV will always look better no matter what.

480i can look worse on an HD capable tv than a standard set. This is because the HD sets tend to expose the flaws of lower quality images. Its a higher resolution display so any imperfections are going to stand out more. Some sets do a better job than others with non-hd sources. It can also be a product of upconversion. Most HD sets internally upscale 480i signals to a higher resolution. If youre talking about LCD or DLP, thats usually 720p or somewhere around it. My Toshiba CRT rear projection upscales 480 anything to 540p. It doesnt display 720 at all so I have to set my 360 for 1080i.

If you have a nice non-hdtv(not projection) ya the 480i res will look better because the color will be alot richer and the flaws of being interlaced will not be noticeable. But you know tv quality is wide ranging. If your gonna play on a regular tv try to make it a flat screen above 27" and at least a name brand.

yeah with tv's, allways go with a name brand. best option is to get a hd one (native 720p), as big as possible. just make sure you try to see it in action before spending your hard earned.

if you buy a good TV, although it may cost a bit more, it will last you a lot longer. trust me, dad fixes TV's for a living. The good (semi-ecpensive) name brand ones last a lot longer then dodgey japanese imports
