does anyone know the specs on the hard drive and if I can buy a 120gb 1.8" HDD and format to work in my zune?

nice, I'm assuming that this is the specs for the drive in the zune?

now to just find out how to open the zune without damaging it and if the zune will automaticaly format a fresh drive

It will after you run the software. And yea, they are 1.8". People have discovered that the 40gig iPod drives fit in Zunes nicely.
