Have done my research and figured that my standard chipped(xecuter2) xbox should be able to play the following:

XBMC capability on a standard Xbox (Intel 733Mhz PIII CPU):
720x480p video output to 720x480p = OK! (eg not upscaled).
720x480p video output to 1024x720p = OK! (eg upscaled to 720p).
720x480p video output to 1920x1080p = OK! (eg upscaled to 1080i).
1024x720p video output to 1024x720p = FAIL! (eg native 720p).
1920x1080i video output to 1920x1080i = FAIL! (eg native 1080i).
Note! All above that sais FAIL don't actualy fail to play, it's just that the Xbox CPU is to slow to decode and render the high resolution so they will play so slow (dropped frames) making it unwatchable.

I currently have my xbox hooked up to a monitor via xvga2 at 1080i. First of all, the DVDs refuse to run and second of all, when i run the xbmc at 720p and upscale the DVD, they tend to chug quite a bit. Should i not be able to run my upscaled 480p smoothly?

I am using a late august 05 build of XBMC, does something special needs to be configured for smooth playback?

99.5% due to the xbox limited hadware. 64mb of ram and a 733 mhz cpu just wont cut it when it comes to H-D videos.

this very much depends on your settings in xbmc:

- turn postprocessing off
- turn on hardware overlays
- turn deinterlacing off (when in 720p)
- you have to tweak with cache settings for 1080i

I have noticed different behaviour with 1080i, i now always run in 720p. Movies used to play for a minute or 2 and then suddenly stop. In 720p everything plays fine (I play 1024x576 xvid's with AC/DTS without any problem/framedrops).
Upscaled DVD's play fine here.

thanks for the detailed reply.

hm... could you give me some more details on tweaking the cache? i've basically set the DVDvideo cache to max and turned down the internet and lan cache, however, i still get chuggin in 720p.

where is the deinterlacing option? i cant find it under system, appearance or my video.

Im currently using the region 3 version of kung fu hustle as my medium for testing upscaling. I also use a 576p version of joey ep19 for testing.

kungfu hustle on dvd chugs/drops a whole lot whilst the joey, run from hd, chugs/drops a lot less but still has some.

Have you set the hardware overlays iso pixel shaders ? Also try to set smoothed a/v synchronisation.
Deinterlacing options have been introduced later than the 5th of august, if i am correct.
The cache should not be maximum, actually lower than 4096, but i am speaking from experience with high resolution xvids in 1080i setting. This applies to LAN when you play from LAN ofcourse. With 720p everything plays here.

Just got myself the sept 1 05 release of XBMC and it has solved all issues at 720p level.

The new release even allows me to run the joey ep at 1080i smoothly. The only remaining prob now is DVDs wont run at all at 1080i level? It does the whole cache reading and then nothing happens.

I have turned on the a/v synch and hardware overlay, still cant seem to find the deinterlacing option though... Ive now reverted back to default cache settings.

Have you had any luck with DVDs upscaled to 1080i?

I've never gotten DVDs to upscale to 1080i properly and have generally heard the same result from anyone who has put some time into it to get it working. Haven't tried any of the newer releases but the most success I've had was a very long loading time (like a near freeze) and then very modest results and sluggish response to controls on just about any DVD I threw at it. After seeing the results - I don't really have any interest in upscaling DVDs through the Xbox - I'd rather run them a native resolution on a quality standalone player. Maybe if a had a 720p native set (LCD/DLP/Plasma) but mine will handle both 1080i and 480p native so I run XBMC and everything in 1080i just because I don't like the resynch effect when dropping to 480p and I like the 1080i in pictures and menus in XBMC and Avalaunch.

The only build I had that worked at 1080i with little problem was the 07-24-05 build. The latest build only works for me on some DVDs but mostly die on others. I have tried everything I know, however to no avail. Hopefully this will be fixed in other builds. Good luck. lurk.gif

Just upgraded to the 9-13 build, upsaled DVDs @ 1080i works but not in widescreen (ie. black bars on each side) but the video doesn't seem to be distorted. Is there a way to get widescreen with 1080i?
