I dont know if you guys specialize in this, but I thought maybe a few of you out there have the same problem I have an found a way to fix it. I have a D-Link DI-604 router and a Bellsouth Speed Touch USB modem. As some of you may know the Bellsouth USB modems don't have an ethernet port just a plain old RJ-11. I just bought Xbox Live and I was trying to plug it up to my router when I keep getting DNS not resolved error. SO I called tech support and they said that I have to run my PC through the 1 port on my router not the WAN port, and they also said I need to do alot of configuring to get this to work. So what I am asking is, if anybody knows how ot do this configuring. So what I am trying to do is use the router as a link between the Xbox and the PC. So I am going to have my modem still connected to my PC, but also have an ethernet going from my PC to the router and from the Xbox to the router so it will look something like this... user posted image

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If I'm understanding you correctly:

1) Your DSL modem only connects via USB
2) You connected the modem to your PC via USB
3) You have your PC and XBOX hooked up to your router via RJ45 Cat5 cables.

Well, I think you have 3 options:

1) Call Bell South and ask them to replace your modem with one that uses RJ45 instead of USB
2) Get a USB to ethernet adapter from http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...p?sku=TC3S-1004 and then get a USB female to female adapter from Radio Shack. Then attach your USB modem to your router.
3) Keep your current setup and try setting up your PC for internet connection sharing. Win98. 2k and XP are all capable of doing this. This way your PC will assign an IP address to your XBOX. I'm not sure if this will work but it's worth a try.

I would strongly suggest going with option 1. I'm sure Bell South won't have any problems replacing the modem. Just tell them it doesn't work and you want one with an RJ45 port. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Well the problem with going for option 1 is that Bellsouth trys to juice $150 out of you for this. I am going with option 3 because I called tech support and the guy said it was possible. So bypassing having to spend and more money, I will try to take the time and find out how to do this. If there is anything or site that you have to contribute, that would be greatly apperciated.

By the way thanks for the help ifantig.

depends on the o/s but windows xp makes ics (internet connection sharing) very easy. just run the application and make sure that you restart everytime it asks you to so that all settings are verified and working. also you will probably need to set static ips over the netwrok and turn off dhcp on the lan to get it fully working. should all be in your routers instruction manual. if you need more help you can pm me and if your on xp i can try a remote assistance session if you want. if the modem is on the PC, you are using the PC as a router when you run ICS/Winroute etc. You do not need the seperate router, just a switch or crossover cable if u only have the PC and xbox

heh but i think he needed a second port or else was using the router as a swicth so he could use non-crossover cables... otherwise yeh ull need a crossover cable and can just connect one to the other.

oh yeah, I forgot about those crossover cables. That will definitely do it. However, you should still connect your XBOX to the router since you have it anyway. The router has a built in firewall. I hope you're running a firewall on the PC as well.
