I was attempting to solder the 79 passkey for flashing of a 79FL drive. I managed to get it on (flat-ribbon install), tested connectivity, no bridged pins, etc. However due to the heat of the xbox or pressure from the bottom piece of the dvd, the flat-ribbon header came off before I could dump. I resoldered it, but afterwards, I noticed my drive was no longer spinning after I inserted anything (official game, movie). I can get to the xbox menus just fine. Whenever I put something in, it says "Reading" then switches to "Open Tray." I then tried without the chip installed and no luck.

After the header came off the first time, it destroyed one of the end pads, specifically the one specified for E. Could that be a factor?

Also, I happened to have another 79FL in reach and I switched logic boards to see if it was a mechanical issue. Still does not spin. This 2nd 79FL was also opened at some point for soldering of a passkey as well, so its mechanical parts are not untouched either.

On a different note, is it possible to dump the fw without having the drive spin?

Thanks so much!

the firmware can be dumped by using a external programmer
i don't think the E goes anywere, you could scan the board and post a picture that would be helpfull

You can see the extra solder where I soldered a wire to the chip b/c of the destroyed pad. A lot of epoxy residue but there's no bridging up there.

If this board is unrecoverable, does anyone offer external programmer services? I've got a Samsung I think that works and I'd just rather get the key of this drive and flash that.

looking at your pic the trace on the left hand side being no 17 count over to number 24 and make sure that goes to the grond fill with the via, if it is not there would be no power and this would explain the problem

Yup, just checked, it's connected to ground.
